Background
Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a not-for-profit institution that exhibits, collects, preserves, and researches contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora; conceives and hosts international exhibitions; develops supporting educational, discursive, and enriching programmes; encourages intercultural understanding; and strives for access for all.
The institution also includes the Centre for Art Education, the Centre for the Moving Image, and a Project Space for emerging artists.
It opened to the public in September 2017.Key responsibilities of this role
Reporting to Facilities Manager, the main purpose of the Facilities Assistant is to undertake various repairs within the building and ensuring that building systems are operational.
Preventative and Reactive Maintenance
- Ensure that contractors on site are escorted through the building
- Ensure that contractors working on site are working in a safe manner in accordance with the rules in the Induction Manual
- Undertake instructions on preventative and reactive maintenance issued by Facilities Supervisor or Facilities Manager on any building service as instructed
- Undertake maintenance and repairs within a reasonable time period
- Ensure all plantrooms are clean and disinfected where required
- Cleaning of drains
General Repairs
- Execute repair work orders for Facilities Assistants on broken items, service on all plumbing related equipment, light replacement (excluding any other Electrical work), painting and general repairs
- Safely undertake general repairs, excluding electrical repairs, but including light lamp replacements
- Complete reasonable work order requests
- Unblock drains and keep all drains that are accessible clean
- Executing call logged related incidents
Inspections
- Undertake assigned Daily, Weekly and Monthly inspections as instruction by Facilities Supervisor or Facilities Manager, or by work order
- Inspect the building every morning for safety and report back to the supervisor before opening to public
- Reporting of any issues timeously that can negatively impact any equipment or life safety
- Report back timeously on tasks and work orders completed
Occupational Health and Safety Act Implementation and Enforcement
- Ensure contractors are working safely on site
- Ensure contractors and service providers are adhering to the OHS Act, including yourself and other staff
- Ensure all work done in the building is done safely in accordance with the OHS Act
Inter-departmental Assistance
- Assist where required, under instruction of the Facilities Manager or Facilities Supervisor only via a work order, other departments with moving of materials or event setups
- Overseeing the office (furniture and equipment) movement and related tasks, including but not limited to, installation of furniture; repair doors, locks, handles, replace ceiling tiles, general paint work etc
What you'll need to be successful in the role:
- Minimum Grade 12 certificate or equivalent.
- Preferably a diploma or N5 mechanical or electrical qualification
- Minimum of 2 years' experience working within a facilities environment
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Willing and available, flexible to work extended hours and over weekend as maybe operationally required
- Flexible working when installation schedules require it
- Standby duty essential
- Code EB Driver's License
- Medically fit experiencing no difficulty with walking, hearing, eyesight, climbing steps or entering confined spaces with no fear of heights
Skills required in the role:
- Good administration skills
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
- A good eye for detail and identifying maintenance and risk aspects
- Ability to work independently and deliver work within the agreed timeframes
- Flexible working when installation schedule requires it
- Ability to remain calm, handle pressure, and be professional in a crisis
Knowledge
- Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems and fire safety systems
- Basic knowledge on vertical transport systems
- Understanding of OHS Act 85 of 1993 and building safety
- Knowledge of how to operate power tools and hand tools safely
- Understanding how to work safely in a public environment
- Basic knowledge of practices, procedures, equipment, materials, and tools, used in the maintenance and repair of buildings
- Basic knowledge of building works including painting, plumbing, tiling, HVAC, basic electrical (lighting) and mechanical systems.
