Educational Program Coordinator

Bryanston, South Africa African Parks Full time

AP has aligned itself with the globally adopted vision of having 30% of Africa protected and conserved for nature by. The organisation therefore aims to effectively manage 30 parks by 2030. To attain this objective in a manner that does not jeopardise the quality and effectiveness of current and future management, AP must have the right staff, with the right skills and experience, while at the same time placing a strong emphasis on the development of a continental-wide pipeline of managers and professional staff. The sector at large - including government wildlife authorities, other conservation organisations, AP Incubator partners and community organisations - is facing similar needs.

Although several training facilities in Africa conduct wildlife management courses, AP experience and market research have shown that none of these provide a comprehensive and practical solution that meets AP requirements and needs. AP hence intends to develop its training academy and to provide practical, all-encompassing courses to cater both to its own operational needs as well as those of the conservation sector at large. While the organisation benefits from the appropriate experience in protected area management to lead the project, the creation of an academy is a new activity for AP, who has therefore called on the African Leadership University School of Wildlife Conservation (SOWC) as the implementing partner.

**About the Role**

The Educational Program Coordinator will spearhead the development of the Park Manager (PM) and Park Management Unit (PMU) course curricula for AP. Collaborating closely with SOWC, they will delineate the desired learning outcomes for each module and supply all pertinent content related to AP. This information will be utilised by SOWC educational experience designers to craft comprehensive curricula and course content. Additionally, the Educational Program Coordinator will work closely with Akagera management to ensure that Akagera serves as an exemplary park for the Academy, providing students with an optimal hands-on learning experience.

**Key tasks and responsibilities**
- Collaborate with SOWC experts and affiliated learning experience designers to articulate desired learning outcomes for each training module, and shape course content including topics, case studies, experiential learning, and assessments.
- Work closely with Akagera team to ensure that experiential training is feasible. Develop a plan to ensure the that necessary infrastructure and systems upgrade is carried out before the opening of the Academy in 2025, and that additional staff is recruited and trained as needed.
- Ensure that the course content is compliant with AP SOPs.
- Once course content is clarified, develop the AP Academy schedule. At full capacity, this schedule should accommodate at least 6 different PMU trainings (15 pax each) and 2 PM trainings (10-15 pax each), with at least 1 session in French for each program.
- Work with SOWC to assess certification implications on the curriculum and provide recommendations to AP on the way forward.
- Define minimum requirements for participation in PM and PMU trainings.
- Identify potential AP faculty and create a 'train the trainer' program in coordination with SOWC.
- Plan the pilot phase for testing PM and PMU training programs in collaboration with the Academy Manager. Consolidate lessons learnt and coordinate curriculum adaptations with SOWC.
- Provide support to Conservation Development Director and Institutional SPM on admin-related tasks (IAF, proposal development, 5YBP and budget update, etc.).

**Requirements**:

- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as conservation, environmental studies or project management.
- Minimum of 5 years of work experience in conservation, with a solid comprehension of the diverse aspects of protected area management.
- At least one work experience with AP (min. 1 year) and a very fine knowledge and understanding of the model and the organisation’s SOP.
- Successful track-record in an academic, research or mentoring field.
- Successful track record in leading or coordinating a multi-cultural and interdisciplinary project. Proven capacity to consistently meet deadlines.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and proven ability to interact with people from very different backgrounds, cultures, and seniority.

- Capacity to work autonomously and take initiatives.
- Passionate about conservation, Africa, its people and its biodiversity.
- Ability to speak or read French is a plus.
