our client, an established fruit farm in the overberg, 10km from the tourist town of greyton, is looking to appoint an experienced general manager who will be responsible for all aspects of the business.

the farm mainly specializes in the cultivation of pears and apples, but also has cattle and a hectare of vineyard for winemaking. the farm currently consists of 70 hectares of established orchards (apples / pears) and additional land for future development. the plan is to include 450 heads of cattle for breeding, growing and consecutive selling. in addition to the farming activities the hospitality components include, wine tasting, events & guest accommodation.

duties will include but not be limited to:

- direct and coordinate the overall operations of the orchard and the farm.
- manage a team of regular and seasonal employees. responsible for leadership, hiring, training, and coaching in a harmonious working climate, while maximizing employee morale and productivity.
- establish goals, direction, and vision while strategically planning all projects with the owners.
- manage the guest houses and events at the farm throughout the year.
- identify equipment improvements, changes, and/or replacements.
- budget and manage the orchard to ensure efficient/profitable operations and ongoing fiscal responsibilities.
- proven ability to communicate and work with all levels of management.
- establish worldwide distribution and negotiate contracts and deals.
- present better opportunities, given current economic conditions.

requirements:

- suitable qualification is required
- minimum of 7 years of experience in managing irrigated apple/pears tree crops.
- strong leadership and decision-making skills.
- proven ability to effectively build and manage a team-oriented culture.
- must have mechanical aptitude and irrigation knowledge.
- must have extensive knowledge of growing apples and pears.
- preferred knowledge of growing vineyards and producing wine.
- preferred to have knowledge of growing, breeding, and managing cattle.
- excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
- possess computer literacy with working knowledge of word and excel.
- proof of valid driver’s licence.
