Medical Aid rate based on principal member only)- To be confirmed- Advert Closing Date- 18/6/2023- Job PurposeTo provide leadership in the Department of Nursing Sciences with regard to all matters related to research and in particular to teach research methods, co-ordinate research projects and provide supervision and support to students in nursing up to the Doctoral levels. Formal academic and work-based teaching and assessments according to a set syllabus of research methodology in the postgraduate programmes.

Supervision of master students within a Primary Health Care approach, to support the department and faculty in pursue of achieving its academic objectives.

Academic administration from admission until completions, and contributing to academic initiatives undertaken by the faculty to enhance a Teaching and Learning environment.

Contribute in the programme coordination structure of the Department and where applicable teach in the undergraduate programme.

  • Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • A doctoral degree in Nursing Science or an equivalent qualification.
  • A qualification in nursing education.
  • Registered at the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse and midwife, nurse educator and nurse administrator.
  • At least four (4) years' relevant lecturing experience in Higher Education.
  • Evidence of involvement in postgraduate supervision or a research project.
  • Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
  • Lecturing research methodology to nursing science students.
  • Proving postgraduate research supervision and leadership and support in research activities in the Department of Nursing Sciences.
  • Quality assurance principles to be followed in the offering of postgraduate programmes and research methodology. Contribute where needed in the undergraduate programme.
  • Promote scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Establishing and monitoring academic and clinical records and progress of students according to SANC regulations of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and full academic administration of students from admissions to completions.
  • Curriculum development and theoretical and clinical teaching and assessments in the nursing programmes through e.g. monitoring and reporting.
  • Formal academic and clinical development of student learner nurses within a workintegrated learning, person centered and mobile learning environment.
  • Management of and partaking in WIL laboratory activities, following the SANC nursing standards, and coordination of WIL activities of learners.
  • Assist in the Department with educational activities and research where a need is identified by the HoD, to enhance the quality of delivery of programmes.
  • Involvement in community development projects and portfolios in the department, as well as developing partnerships with other institutions.
  • Involvement in professional development and research projects of staff.
  • Coordination and supervision of research activities.
  • Supervision of postgraduate students.
  • Writing of research publications.


 Competencies
  • Appropriate level of academic and WIL knowledge in Nursing education and research methodology within a PHC approach.
  • Ensure that the classroom and WIL settings used for learning and teaching are well equipped.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team as a rolemodel.
  • Demonstrate planning, organising, leadership and control skills to assist in tasks relating to admission of students to completion of their studies.
  • Computer literacy and implementation thereof in education settings, along with accountability for allocated portfolio under a program coordinator and within the Department.
  • Strong learner centered approach and ability to work in a team and in environment with strong work ethics.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Research development of peers.
