Applications are invited for a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS).

The Senior Researcher will lead a portfolio of research projects on land tenure regimes in rural South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia; write funding and research proposals and research findings; publish academic articles; disseminate research findings to policy-makers and society at large, teach and supervise postgraduate students.


Key performance areas:

  • Undertaking indepth research on tenure regimes and state formation and develop an innovative research programme on specific topics related to this theme;
  • Regularly publish research reports, occasional papers and journal articles;
  • Teaching classes in short courses and postgraduate modules offered by the Institute;
  • Supervising M Phil and Ph D students registered at the Institute and its related departments;
  • Playing a leading role in fundraising and the development of new research projects; and
  • Participating in the organisational life and the leadership of the organisation.

Minimum Requirements

  • A PhD in a relevant social science discipline;
  • A minimum of two years of experience as team leader engaged in fields directly related to the proposed research programme;
  • A track record of publications in relevant fields;
  • Familiarity with the academic literature on land tenure and agrarian change;
  • Indepth knowledge of key policy debates concerning land tenure and agrarian change in Southern Africa;
  • Knowledge of and connections with relevant government and civil society networks in the region; and
  • A detailed familiarity with the research agenda and policy aims of PLAAS.
