Contract Overview

AOSIS, an independent open-access scholarly publisher, seeks an experienced individual to cover the Publisher role during Maternity leave.

This temporary position is ideal for someone with a solid background in scholarly book publishing, outstanding leadership skills, and a drive for success in the open-access sector. The role offers hybrid working, with 1-2 days in the company's office in Durbanville, fostering collaboration with a friendly team.

Key responsibilities

  • Strategic leadership:
    Develop and execute the publishing strategy aligned with overall business goals.
    Lead and motivate teams to meet high standards and deadlines.
  • Title acquisition and development:
    Oversee new title acquisition, ensuring a diverse list.
    Guide authors through the publication process.
  • Editorial oversight:
    Ensure top-quality editorial content.
    Review and approve manuscripts in collaboration with editors.
  • Commercial management:
    Monitor publishing budget and timelines for efficient operations.
    Implement strategies for title reach and impact.
  • Stakeholder engagement:
    Build strong relationships with authors, academics, and institutions.
    Represent the company in meetings.
  • Operational management:
    Supervise daily publishing operations.
    Facilitate inter-department communication and collaboration.
  • Additional responsibilities:
    Handle author queries and provide guidance on copyright.
    Manage cover blurbs and artwork approvals.
    Administer author contracts and invoicing.
    Present project reports to senior management.

Requirements

Qualifications and skills
Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents with a valid work visa/permit and RSA driver's license.
Experience:
Proven scholarly publishing experience, especially in open access.
Experience in digital and print publishing is beneficial.
Skills:
Strong organizational and time management abilities.
