The Market Insights Strategist plays a pivotal role in crafting, executing, and overseeing brand-aligned strategies, initiatives, and tools aimed at empowering the sales team to enhance visibility, distribution, and market presence. This role also involves spearheading the pricing strategy for both regular and promotional offerings, pinpointing pricing opportunities and potential risks. The ideal candidate will harness data from business intelligence platforms, market analysis, and consumer insights, coupled with a solid grasp of brand fundamentals, to devise best practice solutions that optimize the sales operations across the South African market.

Role Responsibilities

Strategic Business Development

  • Proactively uncovering shopper and market insights that facilitate the execution of Commercial Strategies.
  • Delivering data-driven insights, analyses, and recommendations to the organization and key stakeholders to enhance long-term category growth by effectively shaping strategies on:
  1. Product availability and market reach
  2. Promotional activities and pricing strategies
  3. New product launches
  4. Competitor analysis
  5. Post-campaign evaluations
  6. Overall company performance and growth opportunities

Insight Generation

  • Identify, develop, and implement essential processes to boost sales performance.
  • Establish and manage the data infrastructure necessary for analysis and insight generation – directly oversee data providers.
  • Recognize opportunities and challenges, quantifying the potential benefits.
  • Prioritize and propose solutions to address challenges or capitalize on opportunities.
  • Conduct sales development analysis segmented by customer, channel, and distribution point.
  • Formulate channel-specific strategies and tactics (Retail, Impulse, etc.).
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the South African shopper and leverage shopper data to inform business decisions at the point of sale.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Regularly produce and present account trackers and market reports for both customer and internal stakeholders.
  • Collect, analyze, evaluate, and present trade sales, financial data, and distribution metrics.
  • Monitor insights monthly, providing consistent, accurate, and timely reporting of opportunities for market share defense and growth.
  • Track and assess the progress of all sales initiatives.
  • Conduct special analytical projects as required.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Manage relationships with market and shopper data providers and research firms.
  • Establish strong working relationships with third-party data suppliers.
  • Negotiate annual contracts and pricing adjustments.
  • Collaborate with data suppliers to ensure accuracy and timely delivery of data.
  • Act as the liaison between suppliers and the internal organization.
  • Communicate with distribution partners to ensure accurate capture and reporting of trade sales data.
  • Collect and report sales and distribution data from distribution partners, ensuring accurate and timely data collection.
  • Oversee Master Data Management (MDM) for all incoming data from various sources.
Candidate Profile

A higher commercial degree or University Degree in business, marketing, or a related field is preferred.

8+ years of experience in the FMCG sector, ideally in roles such as Business Insights Manager, Category Manager, POS Manager, or Key Account Manager.

Data-driven with a creative approach to problem-solving.

Strong presentation skills with the ability to convey impactful insights.

Proficient in identifying and prioritizing key insights from extensive data.

Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with sales data from both internal and external sources.

Excellent communication skills, including presentation and training capabilities.

Strong organizational and project management skills.

Committed to delivering insights that drive informed decision-making.

Inquisitive mindset that seeks to uncover deeper insights to support initiatives or innovative concepts.

Creative with attention to detail, adept at using data to narrate a compelling story.

Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
