Job Title: Group Legal Manager

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Group Legal Manager to join our dynamic team in Johannesburg North. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for providing strategic legal guidance and support to our business units, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and driving the development of our legal function.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic legal advice to the Executive Committee and other stakeholders on matters related to corporate governance, compliance, and risk management.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Manage and coordinate the legal function, including the management of external counsel and other external relationships.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the legal function.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to legal staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
Requirements:
  • LLB degree and admission as an attorney.
  • At least 14 years of relevant experience, with a minimum of 7 years in a managerial role.
  • Strong knowledge of South African law and regulations, particularly in the areas of corporate governance, compliance, and risk management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong focus on results and delivery.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MBA or LLM degree.
  • Companies Act training and certification.
  • King Recommendations training and certification.
  • Company Secretarial Practice certification.
  • Compliance Management certification.
  • Risk Mitigation certification.
Workplace Competencies:
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft programs and Samancor Chrome systems (IMS, EBMS, Chromedoc, MES).
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the South African Legal framework, basic business principles, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHSA) and the Mines Health and Safety Act, (Act 29 of 1996).
  • Ability to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of commercial transactions and how they are conducted, as well as the practical application of Company Law.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of litigation and arbitration processes and associated risks, as well as business risks.
