The University of the Western Cape has over the past few years steadily become one of the research-led teaching and learning universities in South Africa, with the capacity to produce and advance new knowledge in recognised research strength and the translation of this knowledge through innovation endeavours.
- Play a leading role in the leadership, development, and support in the institution.
- Provide direction and oversight, leadership and will contribute to the building of systems and support that increase student achievements across the University.

**The successful incumbent is responsible for the following Key Performance Areas**:

- Provide leadership to the university in the areas of research development and postgraduate studies
- Align the vision of the unit to the vision of the DVC: research and innovation and the university
- In association with the faculties, strengthen the University’s postgraduate programmes and develop capacity development programs for students and academics focusing on research.
- Source external funding (including and beyond NRF) to support postgraduate students in the form of bursaries, scholarships, and fellowships.
- Partner with faculties and divisions in facilitating the development, promotion and delivery of research skills and supervisory skills and develop programmes for students and staff in accordance with the strategic priorities of the University, according to national and international best practice.
- Provide strategic support to staff to acquire higher degrees, master’s, and doctoral qualifications, and provide the necessary support to establish them as leaders in research within the Institution.
- Respond to Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) research capacity building, related policy documents, draft proposals, and reports.
- Undertake statutory reporting for postgraduate, as well as review and revise policies related to the portfolio. Such reporting often features through Committees of the Senate.
- Advocate and grow a vibrant research culture at the University, in conjunction with the DVC R & I, Deans, Deputy Deans for Research and other individuals and structures within the University as appropriate.
- Identify and attract new funding opportunities, track national and international developments, build research capacity, ensure compliance with evolving legislation, collaborating with others in the University to do so as appropriate to the opportunity.
- Proactively identify trends/factors that could seriously constrain the flow of funding and obviate these.
- Develop policies, practices and processes that will improve the overall quality of research and research output, in conjunction with the DVC R & I.
- Provide support and leadership for activities that flow from partnerships with Research Councils and national research facilities, industry partners, and other universities, in collaboration with the DVC R & I and others as appropriate
- Assist the Director: Technology Transfer Office to identify innovative research projects with commercial potential.
- Work with the DVC R & I, and others as appropriate, in the acquisition and management of research funding, ensuring optimal efficiencies in the utilisation and distribution of funds.
- Ensure that the office is properly and innovatively structured, staffed by the right people and organised to deliver the right-quality service at the right time.
- Ensure the provision of a quality service by the office including the evaluation of the services of the office in terms of quality and response time.
- Ensure that there are appropriate structures and processes in place to provide the necessary research and postgraduate support services and ensure that there is co-ordination and integration of the different structures/processes/jobs within the office and with other sections of the University.

**Minimum Requirements**

**Minimum Requirements** (Qualification and Experience)
- A PhD Qualification at an NQF 10 or equivalent.
- 8 - 10 years’ experience in a related field
- A senior academic with extensive experience management of Research and Postgraduate administration
- At least Five (5) years of relevant management experience.
- A soundtrack record of high impact publications
- evidence of guiding and successfully supervising postgraduate students and successful research proposal writing
- A valid NRF rating will be an advantage
