The Faculty of Education’s vision is to advance excellence in teaching and scholarship towards a more critically informed and socially engaged citizenry. In this regard, it is creatively responding to national imperatives for education and training in the 21st century.

As part of its promotion of the scholarship of teaching and learning, the Faculty seeks to appoint a **Professor / **Associate Professor **within the School of Science and Mathematics Education. This shall be a **permanent position**, **with** **a 5 Year Term as Director** of the Science Learning Centre for Africa (SLCA).

The Science Learning Centre for Africa (SLCA), based in the Faculty of Education, is lodged in the School of Science and Mathematics Education (SSME), UWC. SLCA is an Outreach and Professional Training Centre with specific emphasis on popularisation of science, science education and research evolving from outreach activities.

The SLCA philosophy is to create a learning environment for science teaching and learning which will result in better matric results by providing attractive, interesting and challenging programmes as well as laboratory skills critical to further studies in science and related careers. Further, SCLA offers Continuous Professional Development (CPD) short courses and structured qualifications at the Post Graduate (PG) level in close collaboration with SSME.
- Leadership of the SLCA including the coordination of all outreach teacher professional development activities;
- As a leader of the SLCA, he/she is expected to drive SLCA programmes as outlined in the SLCA constitution and to facilitate its’ objectives in consultation with SSME and appropriate Faculty committees;
- He/she will work closely with UWC, Faculty of Education, academic and support staff members, school principals, Education Departments (Ministries), teachers and designated stakeholders towards fulfilment of the aims and objectives of the SLCA;
- He/she will be expected to coordinate supervision of higher degrees students on theses related to outreach activities in the field of Science Education;
- He/she will ensure good governance and financial practice and be accountable for the reporting to funders, SSME, the Faculty Board, including an audited yearly financial report;
- He/she will be responsible for setting and measuring the key performance indicators of his/her team members.

**Minimum Requirements**

- A PhD or equivalent, in the field of Science Education
- A strong academic record, with extensive experience in facilitating learning and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of Science Education
- A strong track record of quality academic research, peer reviewed publications and conference presentations relevant to Science Education
- A record of successful postgraduate supervision
- Evidence of expertise, national standing, and definite international presence in his/her discipline.
- Leadership experience at both departmental and faculty levels
- The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research
- Experience in generating funding / research grants.
- The ability to commit to, and serve a 5-Year term as Director of the SLCA

**Minimum Requirements **_(for Associate Professor level)_**
- A PhD or equivalent, in the field of Science Education
- A strong academic record, with demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of Science Education
- A track record of quality academic research, peer reviewed publications and conference presentations relevant to Science Education
- A record of successful postgraduate supervision
- Evidence of expertise and national standing in his/her discipline.
- Leadership experience at departmental and faculty levels
- The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research
- Experience in generating funding / research grants
- The ability to commit to, and serve a 5-Year term as Director of the SLCA
