Background:


WWF has made it a strategic priority to secure the Strategic Water Source Areas, the 10% of the land area of South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho that supplies 50% of South Africa's surface water resources.

The ecosystems in these highly biodiverse, complex landscapes provide a range of ecosystem services.

WWF's goal is to secure these landscapes using a range of enabling, implementation and adaptive mechanisms designed to strengthen the functioning of these ecosystems and improve the water and food security of local and downstream communities.

Within the Strategic Water Source Areas, WWF works through local multi-stakeholder partnerships which bring together government, NGOs, local communities and traditional leadership, academia, and the private sector.

The objective is to promote sound governance of natural resources through sharing of knowledge and the co-development and implementation of innovative and integrative action plans.

These partnerships have produced numerous innovative and effective approaches to securing Strategic Water Source Areas, including community-based conservation solutions, nature-based solutions, green business development and novel communications campaigns.

Cape Town includes both surface water and groundwater strategic water source areas within the city boundaries. Historically, these strategic water source areas provided the first source of water for a growing City of Cape Town.

During the Day Zero drought period, the City of Cape Town focused on alternative water supplies and groundwater became an important resource for bulk water augmentation and businesses and households also accessed this resource independently.

This recent drought was an acute challenge, but it also highlighted the need for a collective approach to groundwater management.

In response WWF together with a group of committed stakeholders formed the Table Mountain Water Source Partnership.

This partnership brings together local, provincial and national government, the private sector, local communities and the academic fraternity, donors and civil society.

The join vision of these partners is "Improving water security through monitoring and management, to ensure water resources can continue to support people and the ecosystem in and around the Table Mountain Strategic Water Source Area.

The parties have agreed to collaborate to improve water security with a particular focus on groundwater in the first phase of the partnership.

Thus far the partnership has made significant inroads with supporting local awareness and education, policy work, restoration of recharge areas and the development of groundwater dashboards to inform both public and government action.

Planned future expansion includes the inclusion of water quality criteria and sharing experience on groundwater management in other strategic water source areas across the country.


Minimum Requirements:

  • MSc or equivalent, in one of the following: water policy and governance, geohydrology, integrated water resource management, environmental science, ecological economics, waterwise city management, social learning and change or related fields.
  • At least 7 years' experience of convening communities of practice and facilitating multistakeholder fora and water governance,
  • Technical capacity to translate water stewardship, governance and monitoring approaches into water related strategies/action plans, development of advocacy/educational materials and management of project implementation.
  • Experience in convening a community of practice or facilitating a multistakeholder platform or partnership. Ability to coordinate, host and lead meetings and workshops with diverse stakeholders, and facilitate discussions in large groups. Knowledge of social learning theories and practices is a distinct advantage.
