Accountant

We are looking for a mature and dynamic individual to join our team of Accountants in Verulam, KZN. Candidates must have 3 to 5 years experience in auditing financial documents and procedures, reconciling bank statements and calculating vat and tax payments and returns. To be successful in this role, you should have previous experience with bookkeeping and a flair for spotting numerical mistakes. Ultimately, you will provide us with accurate quantitative information on financial position, liquidity and cash flows of our business, while ensuring we're compliant with all SARS regulations.

2. Key Responsibilities

a. Financial Accounting and Reporting

• Maintain accurate general ledger records for logistics cost centres.
• Prepare monthly management accounts, financial statements, and variance analyses.
• Ensure cost allocations to departments, routes, and fleet operations are correct.
• Support annual audit preparation and ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policy.

b. Cost Control and Analysis

• Monitor and analyse logistics-related costs (fuel, maintenance, fleet leases, tolls, warehousing expenses, subcontractors).
• Conduct variance analysis between actual costs and budgets.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities and assist management with corrective actions.
• Prepare profitability analyses per route, customer, or division.

c. Accounts Payable and Receivable

• Process supplier invoices for transport services, vehicle expenses, and warehouse operations.
• Reconcile supplier statements and resolve discrepancies promptly.
• Review customer billing and ensure accuracy of delivery documentation before invoicing.
• Manage collections and maintain accurate debtor records.

d. Cash Flow and Treasury Management

• Monitor daily cash flow and ensure availability of funds for operational needs.
• Prepare cash flow forecasts and reconcile bank accounts.
• Ensure accuracy and completeness of electronic payments.

e. Compliance and Governance

• Ensure compliance with VAT, PAYE, and other tax obligations.
• Maintain internal controls over logistics-related transactions.
• Assist with adherence to company financial policies, audit requirements, and statutory regulations.

f. Budgeting and Forecasting

• Assist in preparing annual budgets for logistics departments.
• Track performance against budgets and forecast trends.
• Support management with scenario analysis and business planning.

g. Systems, Processes and Continuous Improvement

• Ensure accuracy of financial data within ERP or transport management systems (TMS).
• Participate in system upgrades, automation, or process improvement initiatives.
• Implement and maintain standard costing systems where applicable.

3. Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree / National Diploma in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent.
• Professional registration (SAIPA, SAICA, CIMA) preferred.

Experience:

• 3–5 years' accounting experience, preferably in a logistics, transport, or warehousing environment.
• Exposure to cost accounting, project accounting, or fleet management systems advantageous.

Technical Skills:

• Proficient in accounting packages (e.g., Sage Evolution, Syspro, SAP, or similar).
• Advanced MS Excel (pivot tables, lookups, cost tracking).
• Understanding of logistics operations, cost drivers, and performance metrics.

4. Working Conditions

Pay: R40 000,00 - R45 000,00 per month
