Key Responsibilities:

Tax Processes, Planning, and Projects

  • Assist in the formulation and execution of the Group's global tax processes and policies.
  • Advise on the tax ramifications of business decisions and transactions, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
  • Support the Group with various tax planning initiatives as directed by the Group Tax Manager.
  • Oversee diverse tax projects aimed at optimizing tax positions, mitigating risks, and enhancing tax efficiency.
  • Ensure project teams adhere to timelines.
  • Scrutinize billing from service providers, law firms, and audit firms to ensure accuracy and compliance with agreed scopes and budgets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, providing expert tax-related advice to align with business goals.

Tax Accounting and Reporting

  • Conduct VAT and other tax reconciliations, advising on adjustments and financial impacts while supporting financial accounting teams during monthly closings.
  • Ensure adherence to relevant accounting standards and tax regulations, providing insights into tax implications on financial statements.
  • Assist in tax audits and liaise with tax authorities and external advisors across various jurisdictions.
  • Ensure timely processing of VAT payments and refunds.
  • Engage in automation projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate with local auditors and external service providers regarding tax accounting calculations and reporting.

Ensure Tax Compliance Across the Business

  • Prepare, review, and coordinate Withholding Tax declarations across group operations, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.
  • Prepare, review, and coordinate VAT returns and related reports across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of local and international tax laws and regulations.
  • Assist in tax registrations for new entities.
  • Accurately prepare and file required tax returns promptly.
  • Review tax provisions and compliance processes.
  • Regularly prepare all necessary tax documentation.
  • Respond to all information requests efficiently.
  • Consult with relevant internal departments to ensure accurate and timely filings.
  • Ensure all direct and indirect taxes are filed within the required timeframes.
  • Prepare and review complex tax returns, including income tax, VAT/GST, and other indirect taxes.
  • Maintain tax balances on the general ledger.
  • Assist in preparing transfer pricing documentation and ensure compliance with Mukuru's TP Policy.

Identify and Mitigate Tax Risk

  • Conduct tax due diligence and health checks.
  • Identify potential tax risks and propose mitigations for existing or planned operations and new product initiatives.
  • Implement internal controls to ensure accurate tax calculations, compliance, and reporting.
  • Work with legal and compliance teams to align tax practices with regulatory requirements.

Manage Tax Audits

  • Oversee tax audits by coordinating information requests, consulting with tax authorities, and providing necessary documentation to support Mukuru's tax positions.
  • Ensure effective communication with stakeholders and resolve audit-related matters.

Tax Leadership and Knowledge Sharing

  • Supervise and mentor junior tax team members, promoting their professional development.
  • Provide guidance and training on tax matters to enhance staff effectiveness.
  • Stay updated on changes in tax regulations and inform the business accordingly.
  • Communicate complex tax concepts clearly to non-tax professionals.

Key Requirements:

  • Post Graduate Honours Degree or Post Graduate Diploma.
  • Relevant certifications and professional memberships.
  • Registered tax practitioner or professional tax certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a tax role.
  • At least 3 years of experience in VAT and indirect taxes.
  • 3 years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • 5 years of experience in a multinational organization, accounting firm, or financial institution, preferably in Africa.
  • 3 years of experience managing tax projects, audits, and providing tax advice.
  • Knowledge of corporate tax and VAT legislation, including VAT apportionment.
  • Familiarity with global tax regulations, particularly in Africa, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in tax software, financial systems, and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Understanding of international tax and complex transfer pricing.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration.
