A Spring of Hope (ASOH) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports community development and food security in rural communities in South Africa. The organization provides permaculture education, afterschool programming, and a growing number of community resources to promote self-reliance and community resilience in the face of climate change and economic stress. Since 2008, ASOH has drilled over 75 deep water wells (boreholes) at schools, clinics, community centers, and community gardens in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. The organization has impacted over 79,000 people through water and sanitation projects and has established over 300 home permaculture gardens. ASOH operates a new Community Center in Acornhoek, South Africa, out of which most of our programming, community gardens, and mutual aid projects are based.

The role:
The Executive Director reports to and works alongside the Board of Directors to provide leadership and vision, and consults with the President to ensure alignment with the organization’s mission and strategic goals. The ED supports the Board of Directors, develops and nurtures local partnerships, oversees development strategy and external relations, and directs local staff.

We are seeking a new Executive Director based in South Africa to manage our shift away from operations at local schools toward basing most of our operations out of our Center. Our Center was opened earlier this year, after the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the local tourism industry and increased economic desperation. The Center currently operates a community garden, where all community members can learn traditional intercropping methods, nutrition, and medicinal uses through our regular courses. In addition, we operate an afterschool feeding program that provides hot meals to 150 indigent children, as well as a menstrual cup distribution program and educational course. We are looking to develop new programming out of the Center in collaboration with a locally representative Center steering committee, including: job skills training for local adults, a tool lending library, a seedling library, and computer literacy courses. The ED will work with the Project Manager to develop these programs, secure necessary funding, consult with relevant local leadership, and ensure regular communication with the community at large.

We are a small, but nimble nonprofit, and we require a leader who can shapeshift and take on temporary roles as the needs arise. We are seeking a highly organized, visionary, energetic Executive Director with at least 5 years of experience in management, including conducting annual reviews and overseeing team performance. The Executive Director must have be committed to the values of ASOH: that community resilience can only be achieved with strong mutual aid, and that returning to the earth in times of need can provide both food security and self-sufficiency. ** Salary commensurate with experience.
