**Qualifications and Required Skills**:

- Archival qualification (e.g. B.Bibl, BInf degree) or Bachelor’s Degree plus Postgraduate Diploma in Archival Studies or Honours degree in Archives with 7 years’ experience in archives of which 5 years should be in the management role of Archives and Special Collections
OR
- Master’s degree in Archival Science with 6 years in an archives environment of which 5 years should be in the management role of Archives and Special Collections.

The person in this post reports to the Associate Director: Research, Scholarly Communication, Digital Services and Systems

**Knowledge and Skills**:

- Relationship management.
- Knowledge and understanding of presentation\delivery principles and use of different teaching materials.
- Knowledge and understanding of project management.
- Knowledge of archival standards.
- Knowledge of archives preservation requirements, storage needs, and registration procedures for archives.
- Working knowledge of copyright clearance and user licensing agreements.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles governing access to archives through legislation.
- Knowledge of Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation relating to archives.
- Familiar with governmental regulations and legal requirements related to archives and experience in compliance with the same.
- Knowledge of cataloguing and classification systems.
- Demonstrated technology skills including digital preservation, inventory, and archives specific technology including but not limited to Open software, i.e. DSpace, Archives Space, Digital Commons, and Omeka, etc.
- Excellent communication skills
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proven ability to work with donors and the ability to evaluate material for accessioning
- Marketing and stakeholder engagement
- Report writing
- Knowledge of financial management.

**Responsibilities**:

- Provide leadership for the continuing operation, expansion, and promotion of the University Archives and special collections
- Develop and implement strategic goals action plans, and policies related to Archives and Special collections.
- Provide strategic advice to the management structure of the Archives and Special Collections Section.
- Set standards and benchmarks for Archives and Special Collections Section processes in line with institutional, national and international guidelines.
- Leads, implements, supports and guides collection development policies and strategies and formulates appropriate management practices.
- Operational planning, coordination and development of the Archives and Special Collections.
- Identify and coordinate special projects within the function.
- Negotiates with potential donors and depositors and participates in donor relationships
- Investigates and implements appropriate and cutting-edge systems for archival arrangement, description, and access.
- Responsible for researching and responding to copyright and ownership issues.
- Evaluates and coordinates the re-housing and stabilization of archives, and ensures compliance with government regulations related to archives.
- Develop, structure, and expand the existing Special Collections into an excellent special collection focusing on the niche of the University students and researchers, and other external clients.
- Human resource management and staff development.
- Plan and develop budgets as well as manage expenditure for the Archives and Special Collection Section
- Safeguard the assets allocated to the Section
- Management of Archival and Special Collections services and strategies
- Facilitate and create archival marketing opportunities institutionally, nationally and internationally
- Ensure corporate governance and the promotion of sustainability.
