- Reporting to the Operations Manager- PURPOSE:
- The purpose of the Transport Manager is to manage and execute the activities related to the transportation function within the company as a whole, focussing on managing driver compliment, scheduling, routing, maintenance of vehicles, tracking and ensuring compliance with legislation and company policies and procedures.- Position activitie:
- 1) Schedule vehicle deliveries and inbound collections in conjunction with plant supervisor.- 2) Monitor and control driver’s overtime.- 3) Ensure drivers training, licences, medicals are up to date.- 4) Monitor telematics, e.g., vehicle tracking, dash cameras, variance reporting, etc.- 5) Maintain and complete maintenance records.- 6) Plans scheduled maintenance of trucks with the Plant Supervisor and Operations Manager.- 7) Ensures that the vehicle maintenance policy is adhered to: a) Routine maintenance and servicing of vehicles. b) To ensure vehicle availability and reliability for operations. c) To reduce overall running costs through an effective maintenance policy. d) Pre and post trip briefings / debriefings are done. e) Pre and post trip inspections are carried out by drivers as per checklist and faults reported to the Transport Manager. f) Tyres maintenance - pressures, tread depth and irregular wear.- 8) Communicates and coordinates with the Operations Manager, Plant Supervisor and Drivers on any problems with the vehicles.- 9) Ensures that the company vehicles comply with legal requirements, licences, COFs, and dangerous goods permits.- 10) Attends to break downs reported by drivers, by liaising with contractors.- 11) Ensures that any driver faults reported are rectified (pre & post check delivery sheets).- 12) Ensures the security of the company's trucks by ensuring that the routes travelled are safe and there is secure parking for trucks.- 13) Monitors and controls diesel usage.- 14) Monitors and controls of tyre usage and performance through: a) Kilometres travelled. b) Any wear and tear noted, to pick up wear trends.- 15) Prepares annual budget for areas of responsibility.- 16) Reports on monthly budget variances in conjunction with the Operations Manager-
**Inherent Requirements**
- Experience:
- A minimum of five years managing a large fleet of vehicles (22-25 bulk vehicles) with experience in managing dangerous goods or bulk tankers- Strong understanding of the legal compliance of dangerous goods vehicles and bulk tankers- National and Cross-border Transport experience- Strong management skills, able to manage a large team of Drivers- Technically orientated, handle truck breakdowns, facilitate repairs, etc- Education:
- Matric and Degree/Diploma in Logistics / Supply Chain required- Skills:
- Must be able to operate independently.- Must have strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage conflict.- Must have a solid technical understanding of vehicles and associated systems**What Qualification**
