JOB PURPOSE:
The Deputy Director: DSA works in collaboration with the Director to provide strategic leadership to achieve the departmental vision and mission, to support student access, success and development in line with the UP Strategic Plan. Further, oversee and manage holistic student leadership development, governance, wellness, wellbeing and access for students with disabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Strategic leadership:

- Develop annual strategic plans in collaboration with the Director and unit heads;
- Oversee, manage, and provide strategic leadership to unit heads and staff;
- Manage the monitoring, implementation and evaluation of policies and procedures related to holistic student development and access;
- Oversee access and success for students with disabilities;
- Oversee student counselling;
- Oversee the student health portfolio;
- Oversee student governance, leadership elections, and development;
- Oversee the development of an interactive student life calendar;
- Oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of programs within the department;
- Operational management:

- Overall management of operational functions for the department;
- Development and implementation of programmes;
- Project management;
- Human Resources and Financial management:

- Manage Human Resources and finances within the portfolio in accordance with University policies and guidelines, and ensure that each unit head adheres to these standards.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- PhD Degree in Higher Education studies, or related field;
- A total of eight years’ experience, with three years in management, in:

- Higher Education, as an academic, or professional service staff member that includes a proven record of leadership in a management position and working with students and faculties;
- Working with students in the area of student governance, leadership or support;
- Human resources and financial management.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
