Our client has been established for 15 years in providing renewable energy solutions in South Africa. They are looking for a dynamic Projects Development Manager to be based in Gauteng but looking after projects in Gauteng and Western Cape**Purpose of the Role**
to provide support in the development of a waste-to-energy project portfolio (the Projects). The Projects will be located primarily in South Africa, including in the Western Cape and Gauteng, with the potential for other future sites across the African continent.
- The Projects will accept feedstocks from multiple sources and produce various value streams, including: power to be exported private offtakers via a connection to the national (Eskom) grid, heat to industrial users, food-grade carbon dioxide, and agricultural fertilisers. The Projects are at different stages of development, including negotiations with feedstock suppliers, landowners, national authorities and regulators, and construction contractors.
The Development Manager assignment will report to the CEO. The Development Manager will work closely with other members including the Chief Financial Officer, HSSE Manager, and Operations Manager.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Carry out screening activities to identify development risks and opportunities for the Projects, communicate with the team on monitoring and mitigation;
- Support with the preparation and monitoring of project development budgets and programmes, identify potential risks and additional tasks to keep to the planned timelines;
- Support in maintaining relationships with key project stakeholders, including landowners, feedstock providers, regulators, and offtakers;
- Support in the issuing of requests for proposals, evaluation of bids, negotiating of contracts, and concluding arrangements for suppliers and construction contractors;
- Engage with the Project advisers on all technical and HSSE matters;
- Attend and contribute to regular team meetings, including steering group sessions with the Project shareholders;
- Work together with the HSSE team to confirm compliance with environmental requirements and the maintaining of strong community relationships;
- Work together with the team to ensure all required permits, approvals and permissions are obtained for the Projects;
- Provide input to enable a smooth transition from development to construction; and
- Assume any other remaining project development responsibilities as delegated by the CEO.
**Minimum experience & qualifications required**
- 6 to 10 years’ experience in power project development, engineering, or consultancy
- Knowledge of the South African power sector, including regulatory requirements
- Understanding of project development fundamentals, from early-stage feasibility to financial close
- Proactive team-member, able to work across several disciplines in parallel
- Willingness to travel and meet with stakeholders across the country (and beyond)
- Able to communicate and collaborate across the development team, including the preparation of reports and presentations for shareholders
- Experience bringing a project through the South African REIPPP process
- Experience with contract negotiation
- Knowledge of waste-to-energy projects
