Job Specification Personal Lines Underwriter (Short-Term Insurance) Client: A Hominum Solutions partner (confidential) Location: Johannesburg North Start: ASAP About the Role Our client seeks a detail-driven Personal Lines Underwriter to underwrite and manage a portfolio of short-term insurance risks. Key Responsibilities Underwrite new business, renewals, and endorsements within mandate. Analyse risk information, determine terms, apply loadings / exclusions, and set premiums. Prepare competitive quotes; negotiate with brokers / clients to close and retain business. Manage a personal portfolio to profitability targets (loss ratio, lapse / cancel rate). Conduct policy wording checks; ensure accurate documentation and timely issuance / binding. Perform renewals, re-rates, and cross-sell / upsell where appropriate. Uphold regulatory and internal compliance (FAIS / FSCA, TCF, POPIA, Binder / SLAs). Maintain meticulous records in policy admin / CRM systems and produce MI reports as needed. Collaborate closely with claims, finance, and broker support to resolve queries. Contribute underwriting insights to product and pricing improvements. Minimum Requirements Experience: 35+ years personal lines underwriting in short-term insurance (insurer or UMA / broker with binder). Product Exposure Motor, household / building, all-risks; valued items and high-net-worth exposure an advantage. Technical Confident with policy admin systems and MS Office; comfortable working from rating guides and underwriting mandates. Qualifications Matric / Grade 12 (required) FAIS Fit & Proper compliance for PL underwriting preferred (e.g., NQF4 Short-Term Insurance qualification / credits, RE5, and Class of Business Personal Lines). Regulatory Sound understanding of TCF, POPIA, and Binder / Delegated Authority governance. Personality / Competencies Analytical judgement, attention to detail, commercial mindset, negotiation & stakeholder management, written / oral communication, time management, teamwork, integrity. Success Metrics (KPIs) Portfolio loss ratio and retention within target. Quote-to-bind and turnaround time SLAs met. Accurate documentation and zero-defect audits / compliance checks.
