Communications Officer

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Education Level:

  • A relevant degree/advanced diploma (NQF 7) in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations, Science Communication or Media Studies.
  • An honours degree/postgraduate diploma (NQF 8) will be an added advantage.

Minimum work experience:

  • Three to fiveyear experience in communications, journalism and public relations within a corporate environment.
  • Understanding of research environment, scientific and social science terms, and scholarly writing will be an added advantage.

Specific Job Requirements:

  • Experience in writing media statements, advisories, briefing notes and other media content.
  • Experience in strategy and media liaison.
  • The ability to take photographs and video and to process and package them.
  • Proficiency in one or more of the official African Languages will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent writing, communications, and organisational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience in working with a variety of software packages.
  • The ability to multitask and to work well under deadline pressure with high levels of energy.
  • The ability to create multimedia content and write well and accurately under tight deadlines is essential.
  • A driver's license and willingness to travel extensively.
  • A proven track record in managing several projects simultaneously.
  • The ability to interact with people at all levels within the organisation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute towards the implementation of the external communications and media strategy for the HSRC.
  • Maintain strong media relations with relevant media houses and networks.
  • Collaborate with the External Communications Manager in working directly with the external media regarding the publication of articles, opinion pieces, stories and other multimedia content.
  • Assist in implementing coordinated communication programmes to profile the strategic direction of the organisation and the business units.
  • Develop content to support the media engagement programmes including key messages, press statements, speaking notes, fact sheets and briefing notes.
  • Contribute creative multimedia ideas to internal communication platforms/channels continuously.
  • Monitor the media environment to assess coverage of HSRC programmes and identify opportunities from the environment to position the Council positively.
  • Work with the media monitoring service provider to ensure that media reports are accurate and reflect accurate coverage of the HSRC.
  • Collaborate with other colleagues like science writers and journalists to assist in the professional coverage of relevant events and write or produce other content as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain a network of media contacts.
  • Provide photographic and video support to identified HSRC events and programmes.
  • Assist with branding to increase the organisation's visibility and brand profiling.
