This opportunity is for an experienced and dynamic General Manager to lead the specialist Engineering Business Unit of a leading distributor and solutions provider for industrial and engineering products in South Africa. This role will be pivotal in driving the growth and operational efficiency of the business, managing cross-functional teams, and ensuring that the business continues to deliver exceptional value to clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Develop and execute the strategic direction for the Engineering Business Unit, in alignment with the company's overall vision and goals.
    • Lead and implement innovative engineering solutions that meet the evolving needs of the market and enhance  competitive advantage.
    • Oversee the development and execution of short-term and long-term business plans and objectives.
  • Financial Management:
    • Manage budgets, forecasts, and financial performance of the Engineering Business Unit.
    • Lead cost control initiatives, ensuring profitability and the efficient allocation of resources.
    • Prepare and present regular financial and performance reports to senior leadership.
  • Operations Management:
    • Drive operational excellence within the Engineering Business Unit, ensuring efficient use of resources and the achievement of key performance indicators (KPIs).
    • Oversee daily operations, including product development, project delivery, supply chain, and technical support, ensuring high standards of quality and customer satisfaction.
    • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements for engineering operations.
  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers, project managers, technical specialists, and support staff.
    • Cultivate a collaborative and innovative work environment that promotes professional growth and enhances team performance.
    • Ensure appropriate training and development programs are in place to continuously upskill the team.
  • Customer Relationship Management:
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients, suppliers, and stakeholders
    • Identify new business opportunities
    • Resolve any customer concerns promptly, ensuring satisfaction and long-term business relationships.
  • Market & Industry Knowledge:
    • Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive dynamics.
    • Leverage market insights to develop business strategies that capture new opportunities and mitigate risks.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering preferred).
  • A Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) or a related field would be advantageous.
  • At least 10 years of experience in a senior management role, with a strong background in engineering, operations, or technical services.
  • Proven experience in leading cross-functional teams and managing large-scale engineering projects.
  • Strong financial acumen with a track record of managing budgets and achieving financial targets.
  • Excellent problem-solving, strategic thinking, and decision-making abilities.
  • Solid knowledge of engineering best practices, industry regulations, and safety standards.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
