The GOOD Party is seeking a
Media Officer
to help shape the narrative, amplify our voice, and ensure our message reaches South Africans across all platforms.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As Media Officer, you will be a key member of the GOOD communications team, driving media strategy, managing press relations, shaping narratives, and supporting our leaders and representatives to speak to the issues that matter. Your work will directly support the party's growth by ensuring consistent, responsive, and impactful communication in print, broadcast, and digital media.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Media Strategy & Coordination
- Develop and implement a national media strategy and press engagement protocol.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute press briefings, media events, and campaign communications.
- Serve as a media spokesperson when required.
Media Monitoring & Messaging
- Monitor daily news (print, online, and broadcast) for GOOD-related coverage or issues.
- Monitor daily print, online, and broadcast news for issues requiring a party response.
- Compile and distribute daily media summaries to leaders and public representatives.
- Draft, edit, and distribute press statements and media alerts across multiple channels.
- Prepare talking points for media interviews, public events, and engagements.
Stakeholder & Journalist Relations
- Build and maintain a database of media contacts.
- Network with journalists, editors, and producers to ensure regular and fair coverage.
- Manage incoming media queries and coordinate interview or comment requests.
Strategic Support to Leaders
- Assist the Leader, MPs, MPLs, Councillors, and representatives to respond to breaking stories.
- Coordinate with research staff for timely and accurate speeches and statements.
- Support issue-based and campaign-aligned media messaging.
Digital & Online Presence
- Work with the Digital Media Officer to ensure alignment between media and social media messaging.
- Approve and shape social content that is timely, strategic, and values-aligned.
- Assist with creating compelling social media content aligned with party messaging.
- Drive key issues through targeted and engaging social media campaigns
. - Attend events to capture high-quality photos and videos that support storytelling and amplify campaign messages on social media.
- Ensure GOOD's website and digital platforms are up to date and well-presented.
Coordination & Administration
- Maintain relationships with communication service providers and external consultants.
- Ensure efficient and professional circulation of press material via email and WhatsApp.
- Coordinate with partner parties in Unite for Change to coordinate media requests, align messaging on shared campaigns, and align operational needs.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
You are a strong communicator, strategic thinker, and quick writer with:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (essential).
- Proficiency in a second South African language is a strong advantage.
- Proven experience in media, journalism, communications, or political comms (at least 3 years).
- Experience with video editing and creating basic graphics for social media is a strong advantage.
- An understanding of South Africa's political and media landscape.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with journalists and editors.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and respond rapidly to unfolding news.
- A passion for GOOD values: Spatial justice, economic justice, social justice and environmental justice.
- Willingness to work after hours and on weekends, as required by the media and political calendar.
