Introduction

Our client, a leading organisation within the waste management, hazardous materials, and environmental services sector, is seeking an experienced Operations Supervisor to oversee daily site operations in Durban. This role requires a highly disciplined, safety-focused individual with strong leadership capabilities and in-depth knowledge of waste handling, environmental compliance, and Hazmat regulations. The ideal candidate will have experience coordinating teams, managing operational workflows, and ensuring compliance with all statutory environmental and safety requirements.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all on-site operations, ensuring that waste management processes are conducted safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with legal and environmental standards. This role includes supervising teams, managing equipment and resources, performing safety assessments, liaising with clients, and ensuring the smooth execution of daily operational activities within a high-risk environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Operational Management

  • Oversee daily waste management, Hazmat, and environmental operations.

  • Coordinate staff schedules, work allocations, and task execution.

  • Ensure all operational activities follow company SOPs and regulatory guidelines.

  • Conduct site inspections to ensure operational readiness and safety compliance.

  • Manage the flow of waste collection, sorting, treatment, and disposal activities.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Enforce strict compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations (OHS Act, Waste Act, Hazmat regulations).

  • Conduct safety briefings, toolbox talks, and ongoing on-site training.

  • Identify risks and hazards on-site and implement corrective actions.

  • Maintain safety documentation, incident logs, and compliance records.

  • Oversee proper use of PPE and ensure staff adhere to safety protocols.

Team Leadership & Staff Supervision

  • Supervise operational teams including Hazmat Responders, drivers, and general workers.

  • Train and mentor staff to ensure high performance and adherence to standards.

  • Monitor staff productivity, conduct performance evaluations, and manage disciplinary processes when required.

  • Coordinate operational handovers and shift briefings.

Client Interaction & Service Delivery

  • Liaise with clients regarding operational requirements, safety protocols, and service expectations.

  • Ensure professional service delivery and resolve any operational concerns promptly.

  • Represent the company professionally during audits, inspections, and site meetings.

Resource & Equipment Management

  • Ensure equipment, tools, and vehicles are maintained, inspected, and operational.

  • Track inventory of PPE, safety equipment, and consumables.

  • Manage operational logistics and ensure timely completion of tasks.

Reporting & Administration

  • Maintain accurate operational, safety, and compliance records.

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports for management.

  • Complete documentation such as waste manifests, inspection forms, and audit paperwork.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric / Grade 12 (Essential).

  • Valid Driver's License (Essential).

  • 3–5 years' experience in waste management, Hazmat, environmental services, or industrial operations.

  • Strong understanding of HSE compliance and hazardous waste regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Health & Safety Certifications (SAMTRAC, NOSA, SHE Rep or equivalent).

  • Hazmat Handling or Emergency Response training (Advantageous).

  • Experience supervising teams in high-risk or regulated environments.

  • Knowledge of environmental management and safe disposal processes.
