Duties & Responsibilities

HAZMAT SUPERVISOR

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Hazmat Supervisor oversees all hazardous materials operations, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, safety standards, and company procedures. This role involves supervising teams, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring that hazardous waste is handled, transported, and disposed of correctly and safely.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational & Hazmat Activities

  • Oversee hazardous waste identification, segregation, packaging, and labelling.

  • Ensure proper storage and transportation of hazardous materials.

  • Conduct site assessments and manage Hazmat operations from start to finish.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with the OHS Act, Waste Act, and environmental regulations.

  • Conduct safety briefings, toolbox talks, and practical Hazmat training.

  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective measures.

  • Maintain updated MSDS records and ensure consistent safety adherence.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and guide Hazmat Responders, drivers, and operational staff.

  • Allocate daily duties and monitor performance standards.

  • Support staff development through coaching and training.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain all Hazmat manifests, tracking forms, compliance logs, and audit documentation.

  • Prepare operational and safety reports for internal and external use.

Client Interaction

  • Liaise with clients on site requirements, safety protocols, and Hazmat collections.

  • Ensure professional and efficient service delivery.

ROLE 2: HAZMAT RESPONDER

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Hazmat Responder provides frontline support in hazardous materials handling, spill response, containment, and site clean-ups. This role requires physical strength, attention to detail, and the ability to follow instructions precisely to ensure safe and compliant Hazmat operations.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hazardous Materials Handling

  • Assist with identification, segregation, packaging, and labeling of hazardous waste.

  • Support spill containment, clean-ups, and emergency response activities.

  • Prepare materials and equipment required for Hazmat operations.

  • Conduct decontamination procedures as required.

Safety Compliance

  • Follow strict safety procedures and PPE requirements at all times.

  • Report unsafe conditions or incidents immediately to the Supervisor.

  • Assist with loading, transporting, and offloading hazardous materials safely.

Operational Support

  • Assist the Hazmat Supervisor in executing job plans on-site.

  • Maintain equipment, PPE, and tools to ensure readiness.

  • Complete checklists, forms, and other documentation as required.

Desired Experience & Qualification

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE – HAZMAT SUPERVISOR

  • Matric / Grade 12 (Essential).

  • Valid Driver's License (Essential).

  • Hazmat Certification / Hazardous Materials Handling (Advantageous).

  • Health & Safety Certifications (SAMTRAC, NOSA or equivalent) advantageous.

  • 3–5 years Hazmat supervisory experience (Essential).

  • Waste management industry experience (Highly advantageous).

  • Strong knowledge of hazardous materials classifications, SOPs, and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE – HAZMAT RESPONDER

  • Matric / Grade 12 (Essential).

  • Valid Driver's License (Essential).

  • Hazmat Training / Emergency Response Training (Advantageous).

  • 1–3 years experience in Hazmat, spill response, or emergency response.

  • Knowledge of safe handling procedures and PPE use.

  • Physically fit and comfortable working in high-risk environments.
