About Us

The Electromagnetic Innovation (EMi) Lab is part of the Advanced Electric Power & Energy Conversion (AEPEC) Research Centre at the University of Cape Town. We develop next-generation wireless power transfer technologies for micromobility applications, including e-scooters, drones, micro-EVs, and underwater vehicles, as well as electromagnetic actuation and energy harvesting systems. Our mission is to translate cutting-edge research into real-world impact.

The Opportunity

We are seeking motivated MSc/PhD candidates to join our team on-site at UCT or continue your postgraduate studies part-time with us.Research activities may include:

  • Designing, modelling, and prototyping wireless power transfer systems or
    electromagnetic actuation, or energy harvesting systems.
  • Preparing technical documentation.
  • Contributing to high-impact journal publications and conference presentations.
  • Collaborating within multidisciplinary research teams.

Who Should Apply

Candidates should have:

  • A bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in 
    Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering or Computer Engineering, or Physics,

or
equivalent

.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- A collaborative mindset and passion for innovation.
