ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ SENIOR LECTURER  MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

The School of Education (SOE) at the University of Cape Town invites applications for the post of Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Mathematics Education

The School of Education (SOE) is involved in initial teacher education through its Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programme and continuous professional development through the Advanced Certificate in Teaching.  The SOE also offers postgraduate courses in mathematics education in the BEd (Honours) programme and the MEd Mathematics Education programme as well as supervision of Honours, Masters and PhD students in Mathematics Education.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE EXPECTED TO:

  • Teach PGCE methodology courses (Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy teaching in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training)
  • Teach postgraduate mathematics education courses (with both a primary and high school focus)
  • at Honours and Masters level
  • Supervise postgraduate students at Honours, Masters, and PhD level (with both a primary and high school focus)
  • Carry out teaching practice supervision of PGCE students in schools
  • Engage in and publish research in the field of mathematics education
  • Contribute to administration in the department, faculty and university
  • Participate in social responsiveness activities to contribute to the field of education more broadly and mathematics education specifically

REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

  • PhD in Mathematics or Mathematics Education
  • A strong background in mathematics (mathematics third year level or equivalent)
  • Appropriate international standing within the field of Mathematics Education
  • A strong track record of research-based peer-reviewed publications, appropriate to the rank of Associate Professor
  • Experience in teaching mathematics education at postgraduate level
  • Supervision of student research at Honours, Masters and PHD level in mathematics education
  • Track record of leadership in an academic institution

REQUIREMENTS FOR SENIOR LECTURER:

  • PhD in Mathematics or Mathematics Education
  • A strong background in mathematics (mathematics third year level or equivalent)
  • Appropriate national standing within the field of Mathematics Education, appropriate to the rank of senior lecturer
  • A track record of research-based peer-reviewed publications, appropriate to the rank of senior lecturer
  • Experience in teaching mathematics education at postgraduate level
  • Supervision of student research at Honours, Masters and PHD level in mathematics education
  • Track record of leadership appropriate to the Senior Lecturer level.

THE FOLLOWING WOULD BE ADVANTAGEOUS

  • Experience in mathematics teacher education
  • Experience in high school teaching
  • Familiarity with primary school mathematics teaching and learnin
