A poultry farm in Stutterheim Eastern Cape is seeking to employ a Hatchery Transfer Take-Off supervisor. We are looking for an individual who is willing to learn and advance within our growing company.

EDUCATIONAL

  • Matric (Grade 12) required; post-school agricultural or poultry-related training is an advantage.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in hatchery operations, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of poultry production, hatchery processes, and bio security protocols.

Job Purpose:

To supervise and coordinate the hatchery transfer and take-off process, ensuring efficient chick handling, compliance with bio security and animal welfare standards, and optimal productivity of the hatchery team.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Supervision:

  • Oversee the transfer of chicks from hatching trays to chick boxes.
  • Ensure proper handling and sorting of chicks according to quality standards.
  • Monitor the performance of take-off operators and provide guidance as needed.

Staff Management:

  • Allocate tasks and manage shift schedules for take-off staff.
  • Train new employees on chick handling procedures, hygiene, and safety protocols.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and report staffing needs to management.

Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure chicks are inspected for deformities, health issues, and viability.
  • Maintain accurate records of chick counts, rejects, and transfer data.
  • Implement corrective actions when quality standards are not met.

Biosecurity & Hygiene Compliance:

  • Enforce strict biosecurity measures during transfer operations.
  • Ensure all equipment and work areas are cleaned and sanitized regularly.
  • Monitor staff compliance with PPE and hygiene protocols.

Reporting & Communication:

  • Prepare daily reports on transfer activities, chick quality, and operational issues.
  • Communicate effectively with hatchery management and other departments.
  • Report equipment malfunctions or process deviations promptly.

  • Strong leadership and team coordination skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Good communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively.

Working Conditions:

  • Shift work, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Warm, humid environment with exposure to live animals and hatchery equipment.
  • Standing for long periods and performing repetitive tasks.
