Our client, located in the Stellenbosch area, is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced General Manager/Estate Manager to manage all aspects of the day-to-day running of this incredibly beautiful rural property, consisting of renowned gardens and impressive historic buildings.

Job Functions:

- Regular communications and co-operation with the owners/family trust.
- Public relations with tenants, guests and day visitors - the GM would also liaise with visitors and guests in the context of garden visits, function events and the like.
- Managing a generally low-skills workforce of around 12 to 15 persons, a number of whom report daily to the person responsible for our client’s gardens but includes domestic workers responsible to a supervisor and handyman workers and garden workers who would be allocated tasks on a daily basis. This includes morning meetings at start of work at 07h30 and keeping attendance and Covid-monitoring records, submitting the monthly attendance records to external payroll accountants, dealing with grievances and medical issues as they arise.
- Liaising and overseeing plumbing, electrical and other service providers called in on an ad hoc basis to deal with maintenance issues beyond the abilities of the incumbent manager and other workers.
- Overseeing on a daily basis all maintenance and operational work such as irrigation and potable water reticulation, electric security fencing and gates, management of roads and paths, water heating, toilets, septic and drainage, incidental maintenance such as concreting, brickwork, plaster, roofing and timber works on existing structures.
- Overseeing safety of resident occupants and visitors, workforce and buildings and infrastructure ito fire alarm systems, firefighting equipment.
- Overseeing the use and servicing of all our client’s equipment such as vehicles, mowers, blowers, pumps, generators, ladders and scaffoldings and general electrical, mechanical and manual working tools and equipment.
- Overseeing, recording and maintaining inventories of materials such as steel, timber, cement, gravels and sands, wire and mesh, geocloth, bricks, blocks and other building necessities, as well as fuels, lubricants and chemicals used for control of weeds/rodents/ants/moles etc.
- Liaising and overseeing outside casual contract welder, carpenter and other short-term and project-related artisans and workers.
- The incumbent manager would use WhatsApp both internally and externally and would also operate one of the farm smart phones for remote control of access gates and supplemental electricity supply generator and similar management functions.

Skills and experience required:

- Good observational ability - extremely high attention to detail is required to ensure that the property retains its public appeal
- Business Management knowledge and experience - bookkeeping and administration (as GM the incumbent would be responsible for recording and analysing expenses and income in a form acceptable to external bookkeeping accountants who are retained by the operation. Given the nature of the property, tenant incomes, electricity invoicing to tenants, payroll for less than 15 workers, general capital and maintenance expenditures, our client requires, not unreasonably, the GM to take responsibility although they could retain clerical assistance to do the paper related work.)
- Planning skills essential
- Human resources skills - facilitate disciplinary hearings with staff, divisional managers and lawyers where required
- Good leadership - must be able to manage and motivate teams and promote general well-being amongst the workforce
- Good managerial ability as evidenced by recognition of issues requiring attention, prompt and appropriate remedial actions and effective reporting of same
- Problem solving skills
- Conflict resolution skills

**Requirements**:

- Agricultural Qualification (preferably).
- Farm management experience Essential.
- Communication skills - English (read, speak, write), Afrikaans (read, speak, write).

Important to note:

- Accommodation on site is not a prerequisite, however, it is highly desirable given that the incumbent manager would be on call 24/7 for emergencies such as fire, storm, break and entry. There is accommodation suitable for a single person or a small/young family (as would be appropriate to a young to middle-age incumbent manager), it would form part of the employment package.
