Marine Field Ranger

**Stony Point Nature Reserve, Betty’s Bay**

**Key responsibilities**
- ** Conduct Field Surveys & Implement the ecological programme of work**
- Conduct regular monitoring and surveillance of seabird colonies and existing or emerging threats.
- In collaboration with research teams, monitor breeding productivity of seabirds, counts of moulting penguins, evaluate chick condition, evaluate, and mitigate impacts of human and wildlife disturbance.
- Rescue and stabilisation of oiled, injured, sick and abandoned seabirds, and the rescue of abandoned eggs.
- Assist with the implementation of seabird research projects.
- Support the implementation of disease and damage causing wildlife surveillance programmes.
- Ecological data collection, capturing, management of database, and the compilation and submission of monthly reports in the prescribed format.
- ** Perform outreach, supervisory and administrative duties**
- Perform administrative tasks and ensure timely submission of monthly written reports.
- Supervise and assist in the management of volunteers.
- Support local and international research projects, where required.
- Provide direct support to management and undertake duties alongside CapeNature’s Protected Area Management and Eco-Tourism & Access teams for the implementation of annual Integrated Work Plans and conservation priorities specific to Stony Point Nature Reserve.
- Support the dissemination of related information and education material, community outreach efforts, awareness events and outreach campaigns.
- Participate in awareness raising and media campaigns and events, undertake presentations, lead field talks, provide support and information towards the development of articles and presentations.

**3. Perform legal compliance and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) duties**
- Implement OHS Policies and Guidelines.
- Perform patrol duties and man observation posts when required.
- Education/Extension of all visitors and transgressors.
- Maintain _Illegal Activities and Crime_ Registers.

**4. Infrastructure and Equipment**
- Conduct minor repairs and maintenance to infrastructure and equipment.
- Maintain the designated African penguin Sick Bay and rehabilitation/response equipment.
- Implement adequate stock control of supplies and inventory.
- Elevate all needs to management in writing.
- Infrastructure surveys (buildings, boardwalk, pathways, etc.).

**5.** **Assist in Disaster Management**
- Assist in oiled wildlife preparedness activities.
- Respond to wildfire or extreme weather incidents when colonies are at threat.
- Maintain a level of preparedness and respond to all oiling incidents and disasters at Stony Point Nature Reserve and Betty’s Bay Marine Protected Area following prescribed methods and protocols.
- Assist accredited emergency services during emergency and rescue operations.
- Assist with the implementation of the Disaster Risk Management Plan, particularly the oil spill contingency plans (including an oiled wildlife preparedness and response plan).

**Competency Profile**

**Minimum Requirements**
- Tertiary Qualification, science-related diploma (Nature Conservation/Environmental Management/Marine Resource Management) or higher preferred.
- Valid Code-EB driver’s licence.
- Physically fit to conduct field work.
- Good administration and report writing skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work unsupervised and maintain self-motivation.
- Experience with Microsoft Office software (Access, Excel, Word) required.
- Only open to South African ID holders.
- No criminal record.

**Recommendations**
- Completed Peace Officer training, EMI Grade 5 and/or WIO-COMPAS Level 1 certification will be an advantage.
- Disaster management and related experience will be an advantage.
- Knowledge of coastal and marine environments.
- Knowledge of seabird monitoring techniques.
- Seabird stabilisation and rehabilitation techniques.

**Other Requirements**
- Available to travel locally and internationally at short notice.
- Willing to receive identified and necessary vaccinations.
- Willingness to perform standby duties, as and when required.
- Willing to receive and participate in training and relevant skills development courses.
