Grounds Assistant

The Division for Student Development and Support (SDS) plays a leading role in creating a holistically focused, enabling environment and provides excellent opportunities for students to develop to their full potential as active scholars and responsive citizens in South Africa.
Within the Department of Sports Administration, the role of the Grounds Assistant is to prepare sports facilities regularly for sports events and clean up after use; perform minor maintenance on sports facilities and equipment; Set up all the required equipment in place, including marking of lines, in preparation for training and competitions; Assist with driving duties as and when required.
**THE KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING**:
- Cleaning of sports facilities routinely (before & after events)
- Preparation of sports venues for competitions
- Inspection of facilities on weekly basis and report problems to the supervisor
- Preparation, setup, and clearing of meeting venues
- Do overtime work as per the roster for facilities usage
- Responsible for the provision of temporary assistance in other posts as required and instructed by the supervisor (e.g. Driving)
- Perform preventative maintenance on sports facilities and equipment
- Perform errands and deliveries as requested by the Sports Administration
- Do driving duties, short and long distance when there is no driver available
- Instructions will be verbal or may also be given in writing by supervisor in the form of a requisition
- Deliver sports equipment to various facilities on and off campus
- Provide general assistance during sports events
- Provide supervision to student assistants working within the facility (draw rosters and assign tasks)
- Answer telephones and manage access control when required
**Minimum Requirements**
- The job incumbent is required to have a Matric (Grade 12) with the ability to read, write and speak English
- A minimum of three (3) years experience working within sports facilities with an understanding of various sports is key
- Must be in possession of a valid driver’s licence and valid PDP
- Must have experience with working in the sport environment
- Must be physically fit, have a good sense of balance
**REQUIRED COMPETENCIES: skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes**
- Basic knowledge of sports equipment and usage
- Knowledge of sports facilities required dimensions for different sports
- Must be willing to learn
- Must be able to work in a team
- Must be honest and have a sound work ethic
- Attention to detail
- Excellent time-management skills
