Post Number - 9092 - Faculty/Department - University of the Western Cape -> Arts and Humanities -> Centre for Multilingualism and Diversities Research - Type of Position - Permanent - Full Time - Length of Contract Period - Location - Main Campus - Bellville, WC ZA (Primary) - Closing Date - 3/8/2025 **Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas** **LECTURER** **CENTRE FOR MULTILINGUALISM AND DIVERSITIES RESEARCH (CMDR) AND LINGUISTICS DEPARTMENT** **FACULTY OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES** The CMDR is an established, research intensive and cross-disciplinary unit located in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Its aim is to offer a significant rethinking of multilingualism that will contribute to the development of new discourses on language with which to approach interdisciplinary work in the humanities, and social and educational sciences. The Centre hosts a journal, _Multilingual Margins: A Journal of Multilingualism from the Periphery_. The Linguistics Department has strengths in the areas of multilingualism, sociolinguistics, systemic functional linguistics, formal/theoretical linguistics, forensic linguistics, communication, (critical) media studies, social semiotics and multimodality, literacy and critical discourse analysis. - Leverage their research to enhance the profiles of the CMDR and Linguistics Department. - Supervise postgraduate Honours and Master’s students in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Sociolinguistics. - Contribute to the planning and delivery of a cross-faculty seminar series on multilingualism and diversities and linguistics in the CMDR and Linguistics Department. - Assist with the coordination of workshops, seminars and conferences in the CMDR and Linguistics Department. - Teach courses at undergraduate level in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics/Sociolinguistics in the Linguistics Department and the CMDR Postgraduate Diploma in Language Practice. - Contribute to the CMDR’s and Linguistics Department’s community outreach activities consistent with the University’s Institutional Operating Plan. - Serve on centre, departmental and faculty committees as may be required. **Minimum Requirements** - A Master’s Degree in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics/Sociolinguistics with a specialisation in, among others, family language policy/family multilingualism. - Experience in teaching Linguistics/Applied Linguistics/Multilingualism modules at undergraduate level. - Experience in both face-to-face and online teaching as well as how to design teaching and learning material to cater for both modes at university level. - At least 1 peer-reviewed publication in the area of multilingualism in society or language policy, commensurate with the position of Lecturer in a research-led institution. - Knowledge and proficiency in or ability to work with African languages (this includes Kaaps also known as Afrikaaps). **Recommendations** - Evidence of advanced progress in completing a PhD degree with specialization in Multilingualism in Society and Language Policy. - Conduct research in multilingualism or family language policy with an interdisciplinary perspective. **Key Competencies**: - Presentation and facilitation skills - Adaptability and the ability to operate in a diverse environment - Student-focused approach - Coaching and mentoring skills - Planning and organisational skills - Computer literacy and e-learning skills - Knowledge and skills in the core strategic areas, namely learning and teaching, research and scholarship, community engagement as well as professional leadership
