Senior Planner Job Description

Takealot, a leading South African online retailer, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Planner to join our Retail Buying Team in Cape Town.

We are a dynamic and entrepreneurial company looking for talented individuals with a passion for e-commerce and delivering a world-class customer experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage and control stock investment to optimize inventory levels and reduce waste.
  • Oversee the in-stock function, including demand planning, ordering, and capacity management, to ensure alignment with department strategy.
  • Deliver accurate insights and reports on a timely basis to inform commercial decisions and drive revenue and margin plans.
  • Create sustainable in-stock systems and processes in partnership with central analytics, technical, and product teams.
  • Plan and manage inventory levels to support department procurement cycles, including seasonality, promotion planning, reaction, import purchasing, and continual replenishment.
  • Develop and own the bottom-up budgeting plan cycle and reviews to ensure alignment with performance, margin, stock turn, and departmental strategy objectives.
  • Manage end-to-end inventory availability and inventory health, including improved in-stock rates, inventory planning, systematic forecasting, markdown and clearance provisions, return to supplier activities, and warehouse space management.
  • Drive process improvement and operational excellence within our supplier base by reducing costs, defects, and lead times, while increasing innovation, automation, and economies of scale.
  • Lead a team of buying assistants, including hiring, managing, and developing talent.
  • Support the operations team in delivering a world-class customer experience, monitoring and scrutinizing department returns, defects, and write-offs, and supporting the customer service team on product queries and resolving customer complaints.
Requirements:
  • Decision-making, problem assessment, analysis, and ability to persuade and influence others.
  • Strong numerical and analytical aptitude, with high proficiency in creating and managing advanced models.
  • Experience with process improvement techniques and analytical tools, including Microsoft Excel, SQL, and statistical software.
  • Proven track record in planning, inventory management, and forecasting.
  • Proven track record in spend management, including OTB, margin management, and markdown controls.
  • Entrepreneurial and commercial mindset, with a passion for e-commerce and delivering a world-class customer experience.
  • Strong willingness to learn and adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma in Commerce, Finance, Mathematics, or Economics.
  • 3-5 years of commercial or retail experience, specifically in planning.
  • Proven track record in planning, inventory management, and forecasting.
  • Proven track record in spend management, including OTB, margin management, and markdown controls.
  • Strong numerical and analytical aptitude, with high proficiency in creating and managing advanced models.
  • Experience with process improvement techniques and analytical tools, including Microsoft Excel, SQL, and statistical software.
