Role Overview:

The Head of School is responsible for driving academic success by leading a dedicated team of educators to prepare students for future academic pursuits. This role involves establishing a clear vision for educational excellence and implementing strategic initiatives to engage staff, families, students, and the wider community in achieving that vision. The Head collaborates closely with the Assistant Principal(s) and other leadership roles to maintain high standards for school culture, student performance, and professional growth.

The Head of School plays a crucial role in decision-making regarding the instructional program and operational aspects of the school, ensuring that every student achieves academic success while embodying the core values of SPARK Schools. This position is central to fostering a culture of rigorous and engaging learning experiences.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the High School Academic Manager

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster a school environment that prioritizes high achievement, strong character development, and a passion for learning.
  • Implement a challenging and engaging curriculum that promotes mastery of content, creative problem-solving, and character growth, aligned with SPARK Schools' mission.
  • Utilize both quantitative and qualitative data to inform instructional practices and decision-making.
  • Set ambitious academic and behavioral goals, holding staff and students accountable for meeting these expectations.
  • Oversee student behavior management and implement individualized plans for students struggling to meet behavioral standards.
  • Encourage a culture of self-reflection and continuous improvement among staff.
  • Facilitate professional development through regular observations, coaching, and collaboration with support staff.
  • Conduct evaluations of staff to support their professional growth and leadership development.
  • Create a supportive work environment where staff feel valued and empowered.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders, including parents and the community, to enhance student achievement.
  • Lead school-wide community events, engaging the school leadership team, teachers, and parents.
  • Manage the accreditation process with relevant educational authorities.
  • Oversee the administration of national examinations and standardized assessments.
  • Supervise the Instructional Assistant Principal(s) and support their leadership development.
  • Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new staff members.
  • Communicate policies and procedures effectively to all stakeholders.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities as part of the SPARK Schools team.
  • Exhibit professionalism at all SPARK Schools events and interactions.
  • Manage the school's financial budget responsibly.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3-4 years of outstanding classroom teaching experience, including teaching at the Grade 12 level.
  • At least two years in a leadership role within a high school setting.
  • Familiarity with labor laws and educational accreditation processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in English.
  • Grade 12/Matric Certificate.
  • Completed B.Ed or PGCE degree (SP & FET).
  • Honors or Master's degree is advantageous.
  • SACE registration.
  • Clear criminal record.
