Role Objective:

The Principal is pivotal in fostering student success by leading a dedicated team of educators to prepare SPARK scholars for future academic pursuits and beyond. The Principal establishes a clear vision for academic excellence and implements strategic initiatives to engage staff, families, students, and the broader community in achieving that vision. Collaboration with the Assistant Principal(s) and Operations and Blended Learning Manager is essential to maintain high standards for school culture, student performance, and professional growth.

The Principal plays a crucial role in decision-making within the SPARK Schools framework regarding instructional programs and school management, ensuring that every SPARK scholar excels academically and embodies the core values of SPARK Schools. The Principal is central to cultivating the SPARK Schools culture and our commitment to providing rigorous and engaging learning experiences.

Reporting Structure: High School Academic Manager

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster a school environment that prioritizes high achievement, strong character, and a passion for learning.
  • Develop and implement a challenging and engaging instructional program that promotes mastery of content, creative problem-solving, and character development, aligned with SPARK Schools' mission.
  • Utilize both quantitative (assessment) and qualitative (anecdotal) data to inform decision-making and instructional practices.
  • Set ambitious academic and personal goals, holding staff and students accountable for their attainment.
  • Oversee behavior management policies and support the implementation of individualized plans for students who struggle to meet behavioral expectations.
  • Encourage a culture of self-reflection and continuous improvement among staff.
  • Facilitate professional development for SPARK staff through regular observations, coaching cycles, and collaboration with support staff to deliver relevant training sessions.
  • Conduct regular evaluations of staff to promote their professional growth and leadership potential.
  • Create a high-achieving work environment where staff feel valued and supported.
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including parents, families, and the community, to enhance student achievement.
  • Lead school-wide community events, engaging the school leadership team, teachers, and active parents for support.
  • Oversee the accreditation process with Umalusi for the National Senior Certificate examinations.
  • Manage the administration of National Senior Certificate examinations and relevant standardized assessments.
  • Supervise the Instructional Assistant Principal(s) and support their leadership development within SPARK's network-wide program.
  • Participate in the recruitment of new school personnel.
  • Oversee the onboarding process for all new staff members.
  • Communicate policies and procedures to parents, students, staff, and the community.
  • Engage actively in staff development opportunities as part of the SPARK Schools team.
  • Exhibit professionalism at all SPARK Schools events and towards all stakeholders.
  • Manage the school's financial budget.

Qualifications and Experience:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • A minimum of 3-4 years of exemplary classroom instruction, including experience teaching Grade 12.
  • At least two years in a leadership role within a high school setting.
  • Knowledge of labor laws and experience with Umalusi accreditation and National Senior Certificate examination administration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in English.
  • Grade 12/Matric Certificate.
  • Completed B.Ed or PGCE degree (SP & FET).
  • Honors or Master's degree is advantageous.
  • SACE registration.
  • Clear criminal record.
