IFC has initiated a bold new strategy aimed at stimulating increased investment activity, particularly in Low-Income Countries (LICs) and Fragile and Conflict-affected States (FCS). This strategy focuses on generating our own opportunities for private investments in challenging markets by actively engaging in these regions to create, enhance, and expand the markets themselves.

The Financial Institutions Group (FIG) represents a significant sector within IFC, managing approximately 40% of IFC's overall business in terms of volume and capital at risk. The strategic focus of FIG revolves around three core pillars: (i) enhancing financial access and inclusion; (ii) scaling sustainability and climate finance; and (iii) improving the efficiency, resilience, and sophistication of financial systems.

Key Responsibilities

IFC aims to augment its banking industry expertise to meet the growing demands of our investment services and advisory streams. We are seeking a Banking Specialist to enhance the existing technical expertise within IFC's Financial Institutions Group (FIG) Global Industry Unit (CFG). The Senior Banking Specialist will primarily be based in Johannesburg, serving as a global resource under the supervision of the Chief Banking Specialist.

The role encompasses traditional responsibilities such as leading investment appraisals and loan portfolio assessments, while also adapting to the new FIG model that emphasizes delivering greater value-added services to both existing and prospective clients. Key contributions expected from the Banking Specialist include:

  • Assisting in the formulation of FIG's global strategy.
  • Supporting regional management teams in the execution of their strategic initiatives.
  • Facilitating client capacity building through technical assistance and workshops.
  • Overseeing existing portfolio exposures.
  • Contributing to the development and dissemination of global knowledge.

This position requires significant travel, both regionally and globally.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess extensive hands-on experience in the private sector banking domain, particularly at a senior level across various African nations. Essential qualifications include:

  • A Master's degree or equivalent professional qualification in finance or business.
  • A minimum of 20 years of relevant operational banking experience.
  • Proven expertise in credit risk management and overall risk management, including liquidity, market, and non-financial risks.
  • Strong understanding of consumer banking and SME operations.
  • Proficiency in data analytics and statistical credit score modeling.
  • Experience in conducting due diligence for financial institutions and Fintech.
  • Fluency in both English and French; proficiency in Spanish is advantageous.

Additional Competencies

Candidates should demonstrate the ability to represent IFC externally and cultivate relationships with clients, government entities, media, donors, and other stakeholders. A strong service orientation, coupled with a successful track record in business development and client relationship management, is essential.
