**Chief Operating Officer - Cape Variety Group (Stellenbosch)**

Cape Variety Group is involved with the identification and commercialization of genetics in the fruit industry, specifically berries. They do the evaluation and development of genetics in multi-location trails for commercial field readiness and associated reporting. Cape Variety group also monitors and protects licensed genetics and the associated reporting.

This position will report to the Executive Board and the main function of this position is to ensure that a company structure is created, and maintained with independent management, to achieve the key strategic objectives of the Cape Variety Group.

The principal objectives of this company are to source and secure leading blueberry genetics and to evaluate, support, and distribute these genetics to the company’s authorized producers. The COO will maintain and enhance the relationships with the company’s authorized producer clientele as well as key stakeholders in the berry value chain, including sub-licensees, breeders, propagators, and service providers of the genetic material.

**Qualification**
- Appropriate horticultural / business degree

**Knowledge and Experience**
- At least 5 years experience in a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), senior management, or senior leadership in an industry body
- Experience with legal contracts is essential
- Experience building relationships with growers is essential
- Fruit industry experience will be advantageous
- Computer literate in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

**Duties and Responsibilities**

**Strategy and goals**
- Works closely with the chairman to ensure that the focus of Board meetings is on the right issues, information is available in a timely and effective manner and the best advice and counsel are drawn from Board members during meetings and as required throughout the day-to-day operations of the company.
- Work with the Board to develop and implement appropriate strategies to ensure the company meets its goals and oversee annual business plans.
- Regularly report to Board on current Company performance against its objectives.
- Manage key corporate risks with senior management
- Participate in the identification of new investment opportunities to broaden the offering to growers and to identify and evaluate new grower partners in existing and new regions (sub-Saharan Africa).

**Operational Management**
- Liaise closely with CVG (Cape Variety Group) Board of Directors to develop a management mandate for operational activities.
- Provide creditable and agile leadership to the operational staff on key day-to-day processes and operational decisions.
- Maintain awareness of global blueberry genetics providers and their offerings.
- Ensure breeding goals continue to be aligned with the needs of growers, customers, and consumers.
- Collate data and report key metrics of commercialized varieties to growers in consultation with the Board.
- Create, maintain, and implement information management systems
- Monitor financial record keeping and accounting for accuracy and timeliness
- Maintain oversight of all aspects of licensing/sublicensing of genetics from import to commercialization, including the contractual management, royalty collection, and reporting obligations.
- Provide key input into resourcing, including staff requirements, performance management, and remuneration structures.

**Key Stakeholder relationships**
- Maintain and further develop and build relationships with grower clientele, generic owners, breeders, propagators, and other service providers.
- Work with relevant stakeholders to unlock new potential client relationships.

**Company Representative**
- Act as the owner of company’s public image.
- Represent company at industry and other berry-related events.
- Develop and maintain the company’s brand and genetic performance reputation.
