**Key purpose**

The Language Services Manager is responsible for overseeing the language and editorial services for Discovery Marketing and the Group. Reporting to the Head of Content, the Language Services Manager ensures that communication delivered by Discovery Marketing meets best-practice language standards that are in line with Discovery’s brand principles. In this role, the Language Services Manager oversees a team of language practitioners and freelancers who deliver day-to-day quality assurance of content through copy-editing and proofreading, as well as technical writing, translations, and terminology development. The Language Services Manager delivers on strategic projects, including the implementation of Discovery’s plain-language framework.

**Areas of responsibility**
- Overseeing the day-to-day language services provided by the Language team to Discovery Marketing and other business areas
- Managing a team of language practitioners and ensuring continuous development of team members
- Managing strategic projects for Discovery Marketing and the Group, including the implementation of Discovery’s plain-language plan, achieving the ISO Plain Language standard, formulating Discovery’s language policy, and formalising language training to other business areas
- Managing relationships with various internal business clients, including the Heads of Marketing, Compliance and the Discovery Institute of Training
- Managing and monitoring the deliverables of partner agencies
- Developing resourcing models to meet language and editorial needs from across the business
- Driving best practice in language across Marketing and the Discovery Group
- Continuously building skills and knowledge in the team and Discovery Marketing
- Keeping up to date on new developments that impact the business and team, including technological and legislative developments
- Bringing proactive solutions to the Marketing team and business clients by:

- Researching and defining new ways of doing things
- Measuring impact on deliverables and driving corrective action
- Ensuring effective implementation of plans

- Ability to facilitate difficult conversations and manage conflict

**Education and experience**
- Bachelor’s degree in language, linguistics, communications, journalism or related field
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in English copy-editing and other language services
- Experience in managing a team of language practitioners, copy-editors or freelancers
- Experience in training and coaching team members and other departments on language principles will be an advantage
- Experience in managing strategic projects related to implementing plain language in a team or departmental environment will be an advantage
- Experience in managing stakeholder relationships, including at a senior level as well as with external agencies, will be an advantage
- Understanding of the digital and social media landscape and how this integrates into communication strategies will be an advantage
