Your role as a Senior Safety Officer is to advise and facilitate compliance with governing legislations, The Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993 and its Regulations) where applicable, the Mine Health and Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996 and its regulations) where applicable, South African supplementary standards (SANS /SABS), and other applicable legislation in line with business operations and applicable Codes of Practice, and international standards (ISO Standards).

As a qualified, knowledgeable, and experienced person, you shall provide competent advice and on-the-job training on measures to identify hazards and situations which may result in unwanted events in the workplace, recommend with guidance and understanding of operational needs, appropriate measures to minimize potential risks to humans, property damages, impact to the environment and the entire business operations with quality output. You will also be on a constant lookout for violations that hinder the desired safety culture of the organisation and of its clients and interested parties; such findings accordingly with the proper guidance from management.

Apart from legal aspects, you shall give advice to operational teams at all levels on the understanding and adherence to company standards and procedures as well as those of respective clients and interested parties in your district and during shared interventions in other districts from time to time.

Your work will largely be focussed on prevention so you need to be meticulous and farsighted.

Your interpretation and guidance on ISO 45001, 9001 and 14001 is crucial in maintaining the organisation's certification.

The goal is to establish a safe workplace, develop and sustain a good organisational culture of excellence, safe production, improved moral at all levels and pursuit for the aim of ZERO HARM.

**Duties & Responsibilities**:

- To give support in the processes of developing and advisory on implementation of SHEQ Policies and the SHEQ Program.
- Participate and advise in conducting suitable and sufficient risk assessments and enforce implementation thereto.
- Advise and instruct on various safety-related aspects (noise levels, use of machinery, safe/unsafe behaviours, medical surveillance, workplace hygiene, etc.).
- Initiate and organize training needs for all levels of employees.
- Conduct safety file compliance audits and advise on required actions to maintain the required standard of above 95% on all site file audits.
- Oversee installations, maintenance, and safe operation of treatment plants and equipment.
- Ensure all conducted inspections and audits are actioned and closed out within the stipulated time, signed off by relevant management and records filed on the central IMS filing system.
- Ensure monthly registers are up to date and any new equipment brought into the area is approved for use and added to the register.
- Where necessary, escalate safety inspections/ audits with senior management for appropriate action if you see constant failure on managing findings at site level.
- Champion departmental/ district safety meetings in your area and ensure recording of meeting minutes, distribution to interested parties and filing as documented records on the central IMS system.
- Stop any unsafe acts or processes that present danger to the safety of persons and property or detrimental impact to the environment.
- Ensure all workplace occurrences are reported, recorded, and investigated to determine causes and implementation of appropriate remedy to avoid recurrence.
- Attend clients’ meetings regularly to familiarise yourself with the client’s safety standards, changes, trends, etc.
- Prepare safety performance reports and present to the SHEQ Manager.
- Managing client feedback processes including the client survey, client commendations and client complaints.
- Support external audit function with our accreditation auditors.
- Lead internal system audits in support of our ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 compliance.
- To represent the business core values at all times - “the watercare way”.
- Provide support in relation to document control and improvement requests within the IMS.
- Provide support in relation creating and issuing SHEQ reports to operational teams across the business.
- Assist in the development of SHEQ Communications, products and training content as required.
- To provide support to the entire SHEQ programme and systems so that incidents, accidents, and injuries to people and damage to Company assets can be prevented within the legal requirements.
- To assist in improving the security system so that potential losses of products, related assets and security risks can be reduced.
- To co-ordinate and manage emergency preparedness so that the safety of people and Company assets is maximized.
