**Job purpose**

Provides leadership, setting organisational direction and goals. Promotion and restoration of patient health by developing care-plans and long-term planning of patient care. Overall directing and management of staff including training, collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and providing education and support for patients, family members and friends.

**Duties, responsibilities and tasks**

**1.** **Clinical specialities - consultation and treatment**
- Assisting in admission of new patients for admission, consulting with referring professionals or family members in the event of a self, or family referral.
- Building and maintaining relationships with patients and their families.
- Identification of patient service requirements by establishing patient rapport with potential and actual patients.
- Assessing and determining the overall state of wellbeing of patients to evaluate needs and establish required interventions.
- Assessment and interpretation of symptoms and administration of relevant pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment.
- Attendance of daily handover of patients.
- Accompanying Psychiatrist, Phycologist and occupational therapist if needed on their rounds and providing and overview and recommendations.
- Arranging and management of the referral process, completion of relevant MHCA documentation and referral reports where required.
- Providing continuous education to patients and their relatives with relation to medication indications, contra-indications, and side-effects. Monitoring of the efficiency of treatment and making recommendations to treating professionals in the event where medication requires adjustment.
- Communication with the treating doctor and other specialist and managing appropriate referrals.
- Arranging and chairing MDT meetings, nursing meetings, general staff meetings and Occupational Health and Safety meetings once a quarter with management, incorporating Infection control.
- Bed management, availability, oversight of bed bookings, availability, and collaboration with the administrative team to ensure optimal utilisation.

**2.** **Administrative tasks**
- Achieves financial objectives by preparing an annual budget, scheduling, and managing expenditure, analysing variances and initiating corrective measures.
- Maintains nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures and standard operating procedures.
- Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, and training nursing staff.
- Compiling of off duties are up to date and make sure that all shifts are covered. Liaising with the agency if needed for locum staff. Ensure daily delegation of staff and optimal performance of duties.
- Ensures economic use of resources, man power and equipment.
- Maintains nursing efficiency by means of coaching and training. Planning, monitoring and appraisal of nursing staff.
- Management of staff conduct by means of monitoring, addressing misconduct, investigation incidents and appropriately counselling staff where required, Liaising with HR in the event where disciplinary action is required.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing procedures, rules, and regulations. Oversight of the cleaning staff in terms of infection prevention and control.
- Protects patients and employees by developing infection control and waste management policies and protocols and enforcing optimal implementation of such protocols. And regulations.
- Overall oversight of optimal treatment management according to National legislation. Ensures correct measures are implemented in terms of medication management, control administration, storage and disposal. Ensure optimal medication management and medication availability by overseeing orders.
- Maintains patient rapport and confidence by means of protecting confidential information.
- Ensure adequate staffing in terms of patient requirements by means of acuity management.
- Management of staff leave.
- Record keeping of all unit related matters.
- Ensure that overall quality of care is optimal and meets the prescribed standards.

**3.** **Quality assurance**
- Keeping abreast with the latest clinical and legal developments eg. Attending training, in-service training, reading journals, policies and procedures and networking with professionals, attending CPD programs.
- Setting of goals, objectives and interventions to provide optimal service delivery.
- Maintaining of patient documentation by means of auditing department records and providing training to address shortcomings.
- Ensures operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, arranging repairs and maintaining equipment inventories, evaluating new equipment techniques and providing in-service training to staff regarding new equipment.
