**GENERAL DESCRIPTION - JOB PURPOSE**

General cleaners do most of the heavy cleaning. This includes cleaning floors, washing walls and glass, removing rubbish. General cleaners may also exterminate insects and rodents. General cleaners also assist in other departments with donations, moving & delivering of items and in the charity shop.

**GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Clean floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming.
- Gather and empty trash.
- Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
- Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
- Move heavy furniture and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
- Mow and trim lawns and shrubbery, using mowers and hand and power trimmers, and clear debris from grounds.
- Remove rubbish and leaves and weeds from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas.
- Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
- Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
- Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
- Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
- Adjustment and minor repairs to equipment & furniture, fittings & features.
- Clean and restore building exterior and interior where needed.
- Cleaning, stocking, and supplying designated facility areas (dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning ceiling vents, restroom cleaning etc).
- Performing and documenting routine inspection and maintenance activities.
- Carry out heavy cleaning tasks and special projects.
- Notify management of occurring deficiencies or needs for repairs.
- Follow all health and safety regulations.
- Assist with donation collection and deliveries.
- Do routine inspections and seasonal cleaning as needed.

**EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**
- Knowledge of cleaning and sanitation products, techniques, and methods
- Knowledge of cleaning sensitive materials
- Previous experience in care facility will be beneficial
- Certificate in laundry and housekeeping will beneficial
- Working knowledge of operating cleaning equipment
- Physical stamina and mobility, including ability to reach, kneel and bend
- Ability to lift, push and pull required load
- Matric Certificate
