In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’ the Research Divisions, Units, Institutes and Centres of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) undertake policy-oriented research from its offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, and Pietermaritzburg. Our public purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.
The HSRC was established in 1968 as South Africa’s statutory research agency and has grown to become the largest dedicated research institute in the social sciences and humanities on the African continent, doing cutting-edge public research in areas that are crucial to development.
Our mandate is to inform the effective formulation and monitoring of government policy; to evaluate policy implementation; to stimulate public debate through the effective dissemination of research-based data and fact-based research results; to foster research collaboration; and to help build research capacity and infrastructure for the human sciences.
The Office of the Deputy CEO: Research is the coordination hub of all related research-related activities in the HSRC. It plays a significant interface role between research and support to ensure that the mandated objectives of the HSRC are achieved. It also serves by creating an enabling research support environment which serves as a catalyst for the attainment of scholarly and sustainability outcomes. The office plays a pivotal role in the monitoring of research performance, research governance, research information services and scholarly publications. Under the banner of the Deputy CEO are various sub-units, including the DSI-HSRC Internship Programme.
The successful incumbent will be providing strategic leadership to drive HSRC’s response to youth unemployment through various capacity and skills development initiatives including internships. The role reports directly to the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the HSRC. This is a permanent contract.

**Minimum Requirements**:
- Master’s degree in the broad Social Sciences or Humanities field
- Relevant Management or Leadership qualification
- 10 Years of working experience in an academic or research environment, 5 of which must be in organisational or skills development;
- Relevant experience or exposure in the management of youth, learnerships, and internship programmes
- Leadership and capacity development experience in research or similar environments;
- Working experience in managing large grants and providing high-level strategic leadership;
- Strong business, leadership and management abilities at a senior level, and the ability to provide intellectual and strategic leadership to the team and the HSRC in its transformation agenda;
- An understanding of the local and international research environment.
- An understanding of the developmental context, issues and challenges of the country and the continent;
- The ability to work with makes policymakers in Government, civil society and academic institutions;
- Capacity to drive the HSRC’s transformation agenda and targets;
- Advanced business and commercial acumen;
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Provide overall leadership of the Unit
- Position the HSRC as a preferred hub for youth employment opportunities, internship and graduate programmes;
- Identify opportunities for research and external funding that could advance the HSRC’s work in addressing youth employment, skills shortages and learning opportunities post-schooling;
- Support the establishment and maintenance of long-term relationships internally and externally at both strategic and operational levels;
- Ensure synergies and alignment between sub-units and other ‘special projects’ so that they work to advance the overall unit’s agenda
- Lead institutional flagship projects that address youth unemployment and capacity development
- Lead in driving projects that develop young people in the organisation and externally, i.e., conferences, winter/summer schools and scholarships
