Our client, a Wind and Solar Developer, based in Cape Town, has a current opportunity for a Project Manager - Environmental & Land on a permanent basis. The position will be based in Cape Town.

Minimum Requirements:

- BSc / BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science/Management / LLB, MSc is an advantage
- 3-5 years' professional expertise with an EAP, could include having a background in project development, environmental consultancy or similar
- Familiar with the large-scale energy projects in South Africa and passionate about renewable energy (renewable energy experience preferred)
- Must be fully proficient in English (verbal and written communication), Afrikaans first language is a plus
- Must be a team player and comfortable to work under pressure, thrives in a fast-paced environment with high energy
- Creative out of the box thinker with the ability to pay attention to detail, displaying highly organised tendencies and an ability to multitask

**Environmental authorisation processes**:

- Review with a critical approach all environmental reports and specialist reports to reduce overall impact and mitigation measures to the projects and secure feasibility technically and economically.
- Lead environmental authorisation processes for wind / solar farm and grid infrastructure (Basic Assessments/Environmental Impact Assessments/Amendments / EMPr finalisations) including:

- Management of external environmental assessment practitioners to ensure deliverables meet the terms of reference and legislative requirements and are delivered within time and budget.
- Critically review and manage specialist assessments to ensure they meet the DFFE protocols and all applicable legislative requirements to reduce risk and overall impact to the project.
- Appeal resolution. Work with external environmental lawyers to formulate responding statements/ appeals as required.
- Appoint and manage bird and bat specialists to undertake 12- month pre-construction monitoring in accordance with the latest applicable bird and bat monitoring guidelines.
- Review reports critically to ensure the methodology and reports meet the requirements of the guidelines.
- Engagement with a wide variety of project stakeholders, including presenting and answering questions at public meetings

**Legal**:

- Liaising with local municipalities and provincial/national government officials - Drafting and compiling contracts for appointment of external specialists and advisors.
- Assisting with the submission of various renewable energy tenders such as REIPPPP and/or various private offtake tender processes

**Environmental matters and tools**:

- Take charge of the company in-house environmental screening tool for site selection and bird campaigns
- Represent the company on site and engage with landowners as and when needed
- Lead the timely update of such when required (GIS database updates, new regulation such as legislated setbacks, new aspects), re-launch risk assessments if the company's projects environment is impacted.
- It will be your sole responsibility to update when needed and to use the tool for site selection
- GIS software is used extensively in the development process. Basic GIS skills are required to view the project in relation to the environmental sensitivities and assist the project engineers with mapping if required.

**Industry and Networking**:

- Keep track of environmental regulatory matters through liaising with industry players, decision-making authorities and screening the weekly environmental law association newsletter for new legislation. Any regulatory changes should be assessed to determine the potential impact to the client's projects and inform management accordingly.
- Follow-up on best practice.
- The technologies could change and as environmental project manager, you would assess the approval process in terms of NEMA and other legislation as required to inform the rest of the development team.

**Reporting**:

- Accurate reporting on tasks allocated is required, whether it is the outcome of interactions/negotiation with third parties or during and after execution of a specific task.
- Attend monthly project update meetings to accurately report on progress made on tasks allocated, issues etc. to inform the rest of the internal and external project development team.

**Strategic planning**:

- Be actively involved in team sessions for scouting for new opportunities which could include water desalination project development, small scale wind development, floating solar, rural electrification, green hydrogen, battery etc.
