Safety Officer

Bellville

Salary R20,000 - R30,000 per month

Major Areas of Responsibility:
The Health, Environment, and Safety Officer will play a pivotal role in ensuring occupational health, safety, and environmental compliance within a legislative framework

Key responsibilities include:

- Conduct regular Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment compliance site assessments, inspections, and audits.
- Facilitate SHE meetings to monitor compliance, corrective actions, and engage operations in implementing recommendations.
- Complete task and risk assessments, along with major incident investigations, to identify, eliminate hazards, and determine necessary mitigation measures for SHE interventions.
- Develop safe work procedures, performance reports, and collaborate with operations to implement recommendations.
- Identify occupational health and safety interventions to address compliance shortcomings.
- Analyze quarterly self-assessment reports and recommend necessary interventions.
- Promote health and safety through competency checks, programs, and training.
- Develop SHE Tender documentation.
- Support the development and review of SHE requirements for Engen Petroleum and BP Southern Africa vendor management.
- Assist the Project Manager in developing Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and method statements.
- Create programs to ensure employees comply with safety, health, and environmental requirements.
- Identify safety training needs, organize and coordinate safety training courses, and prepare relevant training materials.
- Conduct regular internal and external SHE audits, surveys, and inspections to identify and mitigate potential hazards and risks.
- Communicate changes in Safety and Environmental policies/procedures to staff.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, providing recommendations for corrective and preventive actions to management.
- Monitor workplace conditions to prevent occupational health issues.
- Coordinate health-related training and awareness campaigns.
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures.
- Conduct regular drills and training exercises to ensure readiness for emergencies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address safety, health, and environmental concerns.
- Maintain accurate records of safety, health, and environmental activities.
- Prepare regular reports for management, highlighting key performance indicators and areas for improvement.
- Prepare and review Project safety files.

Qualifications & Experience:

- Grade 12
- National Diploma/Degree in Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental, or a related qualification.
- Minimum 6 years’ experience in safety, health, and environmental management, with a strong understanding of relevant regulations and standards.
- 3+ years’ experience in a Safety Officer role in the petroleum industry is a must
- Valid Professional Registration as a Safety Officer with SACPCMP.
- Professional registration with SAOISH as a GradSAOISH is advantageous
- Engen Petroleum or BP Southern Africa Experience would be highly advantageous.
- ISO 45001 Lead or Internal auditor certification is advantageous
- ISO 14001, 45001 system implementation and auditing.
- HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment).
- Incident Investigation.
- Proficient written and verbal English.
- Computer Literate - Word / Excel / PowerPoint.
