**Lecturer in isiXhosa-English Language and Literacy Education (Ref 3343)**
Eastern Cape, East London Campus: Nelson Mandela Institute

**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES**
- Doctoral degree in Education (PhD or D.Ed.) with focus on or specialization in literacy or language education.
- Professional teaching qualification.
- Teaching experience at an institution of higher learning.
- Research experience supported by a publication record in DHET accredited journals.
- A minimum of five years teaching bilingual (isiXhosa & English) literacy and language at primary school level, Foundation Phase.

**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE**:

- Design and conduct school-based intervention and applied research focused on bilingual literacy and language development in early grade classrooms.
- Participate in Nelson Mandela Institute (NMI) research and publishing activities.
- Participate in fundraising activities for the NMI.
- Teach undergraduate, in-service and postgraduate students in the area of IsiXhosa or any other Nguni language & English language.
- Support, mentor and assess students during school-based work integrated modules.
- Support and supervise postgraduate students in the area of isiXhosa or any Nguni language.

**THE FOLLOWING COMPETENCIES WILL BE A FURTHER ADVANTAGE**:

- Experience teaching (or supporting teachers) in isiXhosa (or related Nguni) medium of instruction foundation phase classrooms.
- Experience in developing isiXhosa & English bilingual curriculum and materials.
- Ability to mentor classroom teachers in home language literacy in the foundation phase.
- Experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating teacher professional development (both initial teacher education and/or in-service teacher education.)
