The Faculty of Community and Health Sciences is situated on two campuses at the University of the Western Cape. This Faculty is a leading institution for educating health and social sciences professionals in South Africa. Through its excellent learning and teaching, research and scholarship of engagement for social impact, the Faculty aims to transform and sustain the health and well-being of society.
The Faculty is made up of the following academic departments: Dietetics & Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Social Work, Sports Recreation & Exercise Science, the respective Schools of Natural Medicine, Nursing and Public Health, Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of Children Families and Society and Development, and the Inter-Professional Education Unit.
Reporting directly to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, the Dean is a member of the University's Senior Management team. As the head of the Faculty, the Dean is an academic and administrative leader, responsible for positioning the Faculty strategically and for pursuing the strategic goals for the Faculty as per the University's Institutional Operating Plan. The Dean is also an active member of the Joint Standing Advisory Committee (JSAC) and is expected to be actively involved with health and other health-related stakeholder engagement committees within the Western Cape Department of Health and several statutory councils.
The Dean will lead the Faculty while ensuring it fulfils UWC's mission, especially in meaningful transformation.
The Dean plays a leading role in forging links with relevant industries, donors, funders and government; implements learning and teaching strategies in the Faculty to ensure the overarching planning, development, innovation and amendments of academic programmes to provide quality educational outcomes and financial viability as well as effectively implements the Research Policy and Strategy in the Faculty.
The Dean furthermore ensures implementation of the Framework for the Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact and other related policies and oversees student enrolment processes to attract and retain students as per UWC's enrolment targets.
Minimum Requirements
Key competencies for this role are: Visionary and dynamic leadership and management experience; sound human capital and financial management skills; and excellent interpersonal skills in fostering partnerships with statutory councils and building stakeholder relationships at all levels. Commitment to social justice and transformation is demonstrated through staff nurturing and development.
