SANCCOB seeks to employ an Education and Skills Development Manager to be based at its Cape Town centre in Table View, and will report directly to the Head of Operations of SANCCOB.

The key performance areas for this position are:

Education and Visitor Experience:

  • Design, develop and implement curriculum aligned educational programmes in line with the organisation's mission and conservation strategic objectives.
  • Develop interactive tours of the SANCCOB facility.
  • Lead, train and mentor education staff, interns, and volunteers to professionally execute educational programmes in line with best teaching practice.
  • Design, develop and implement education strategy.
  • Ensure income and visitor/learner number targets are met.
  • Actively fundraise to enhance and expand educational programmes, including prospecting donors, writing proposals and reporting back.
  • Strategically network with key stakeholders and develop partnerships to enhance and expand the organisation's educational programmes.
  • Ensure that the organisation's educational impact is appropriately measured, assessed and increased.
  • Manage all aspects of the Visitor Centre to ensure quality and positive visitor experiences.
  • Grow the curio shop and cafeteria income, and source costeffective and desirable merchandise in line with SANCCOB's mission.
  • Oversee stock control for SANCCOB Western Cape.
  • Oversee the pointofsale system.
  • Ensure educational popup shops at schools, markets, and festivals.

Administrative functions:

  • Prepare the education department's annual budget and manage it effectively.
  • Manage inventories of all the education department equipment and ensure that systems are in place to take care of all the equipment.
  • Produce internal and external budgets, reports, and statistics, including the monitoring and evaluation of educational programmes.
  • Ensure that all aspects of educational programmes are successfully coordinated in line with programme specifications (transport, meals, resources, etc.)

Events:

  • Work with SANCCOB staff and external partners to plan, develop, coordinate, execute the annual African Penguin Awareness Day event, and the annual Penguin Palooza event.
  • Oversee the successful implementation and management of all aspects of the conservation leadership programme. This includes successful engagements with stakeholders such as volunteer and internship agencies, universities, conservation entities, zoos, and aquaria, etc. as well as volunteers, interns, learners, and experienced animal professionals, etc.
  • Ensure that the Conservation Leadership Programme is a positive and successful experience for all stakeholders.
  • Ensure sufficient volunteer/intern/learnership capacity is always available to effectively support SANCCOB's operational requirements.
  • Ensure a successful conservation leadership programme experience for all stakeholders.
  • Ensure the development and growth of the Conservation Leadership Programme.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Conservation Leaders Project Coordinator.
  • Manage external surveys, exit interviews, and provide feedback reports and actions to improve the Conservation Leadership Programme.

Requirements:

  • Matric / Grade 12 certificate.
  • Degree or equivalent in Education, with a thorough understanding of curriculum alignment.
  • At least 5 years' experience in Education, of which +3 years must be at management level.
  • Monitoring and evaluation experience.
  • Ability to work with senior management.
  • Ability to provide strategic input and leadership and effectively manage a team. This includes being responsible for the overall performance of the team and holding the team accountable for targets.
  • Ability to lead and implement business planning and proposal development.
  • Microsoft Office Suite and CANVA or similar alternative software knowledge.
  • Excellent writing, reporting and presentation skills.
  • A positive attitude with a passion for environmental education and conservation, and an ambition to make a difference.
  • Previous experience in a similar role within the nonprofit sector is preferred.
  • This role would suit a driven, organised, and structured individual.
