We are looking for a
Compliance Specialist based in Richards Bay to support the Rio Tinto Ethics and Compliance (E&C) team in the management and implementation of the Ethics and Compliance Programme.


This is a great opportunity to be recognized as an expert in your own area requiring specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise.

You will ensure appropriate governance and controls to ensure Rio Tinto meets its legal and regulatory obligations effectively understand and manage risk and protect Rio Tinto's people, assets and reputation.


As a compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for**:

  • Supporting business units in Southern Africa (incl. Angola, Mozambique) with respect to the compliance related issues and projects ensuring that employees, and third parties working on behalf of Rio Tinto, conduct business in an ethical and compliant manner.
  • Identifying compliance related risks, resolve compliancerelated issues and ensure remediation actions plans are established and implemented.
  • Conducting monitoring activities to provide assurance over the effectiveness of the Compliance Programme and implementation of E&C Standards and Procedures.
  • Facilitating training and awareness sessions on ethics and compliance topics.
  • Supporting Risk, Assurance and Compliance Forums, management meetings or other forums providing governance and oversight over compliance related risks.
  • Performing/leading deep dive onsite reviews as allocated per the plan.
  • Tracking and embedding agreed recommendations following deep dive reviews.
  • Performing site engagements/health checks as and when required based on risk.
  • Supporting the Investigations process as required. Ensure investigation remediation plans are implemented and tracked, and lessons learned disseminated.
  • Working closely in a team environment with E&C Compliance, Data Privacy, Investigations and Operations teams to achieve E&C's objectives and priorities.
  • Adherence to approved budgets and plans. Ensuring implementation of the core elements of the E&C Programme.

What you'll bring

  • Professional Qualification in the field of Finance, Compliance, auditing and/or risk.
  • Professional certificates for compliance related training, risk management, and/or auditing desirable.
  • Atleast 5 years' experience in a compliance function supporting the business to manage compliance related risks and ensure effective implementation of a compliance programme.
  • Having worked with multiple stakeholders and management, located across multiple regions and timezones
  • Strong knowledge around requirements of a compliance program and the elements.
  • Team player.
  • Strong analytics skill and high technological competence.
  • Willing to travel outside of South Africa for meetings/projects.
