Our client is in the natural sciences field in a regulatory position. They are seeking a dedicated and experienced Legal Practitioner to join their Legal Department. As the Legal Practitioner, you will play a crucial role in representing the organization in all legal, compliance, governance, and professional conduct-related matters.

Primary Purpose:

  • Effectively manage legal risks for our client, including contractual, litigation, reputation, and intellectual property risks.
  • Provide sound advice on legal, and legislative compliance, governance, interpretation of legal decisions, and management of litigation.

Responsibilities:

General Legal Services:

  • Draft and manage contracts.
  • Manage litigation in the magistrates, labor, and high courts.
  • Analyze regulatory, commercial, and contractual documentation for legal implications.
  • Monitor and comment on legislation.
  • Represent our client in forums where legal representation is required.
  • Monitor the legal requirements of our client's contractual obligations.

Stakeholder Relationship Management:

  • Provide legal advice to management, Council, and subcommittees.
  • Advise our client's management on legal matters relating to their rights, obligations, and privileges.

Disciplinary and Dispute Resolution:

  • Serve as the lead in professional conduct, including tribunal issues.
  • Vet complaints against practising professionals.
  • Research facts of disciplinary cases and complaints.
  • Analyze information, prepare written reports, and implement decisions taken by the relevant committees.
  • Arrange and manage disciplinary hearings.

Good Corporate Governance & Compliance:

  • Examine and analyze regulatory, litigation, and contractual risks.
  • Ensure compliance with best practices regarding legal risk management.
  • Liaise with executive management and stakeholders on changes in legal compliance.
  • Provide input in the development of internal control policies and procedures.

Organizational Effectiveness:

  • Develop standardized legal processes and standards across the organization and its subsidiaries.
  • Establish effective control and coordination mechanisms for all operations and activities.
  • Foster a high-performance corporate culture that promotes ethical practices.
  • Facilitate resource availability through effective procurement processes.
  • Comply with organizational and divisional reporting requirements.

Education and Experience:

  • LLB Degree or equivalent qualification in Law, admitted as Attorney or Advocate.
  • 2-3 years post-admission experience in Legal Services at an advisory level.
  • Experience in legal, dispute resolution, litigation proceedings, governance, and compliance services.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

Special Requirements:

  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Ability to travel when necessary.
