Associate Economic Statistician

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
- Develop and maintain data products using data science tools and techniques that would enhance the department's ability to conduct statistical and economic analysis.
- Apply data science tools and techniques to enhance existing economic indicators and to develop new indicators.
- Enhance and maintain the production time series database.
- Assist in the analysis of data and statistics by developing business intelligence tools (e.g. web applications and dashboards) to identify trends and to build dynamic, reproducible reports and presentations.
- Compile and disseminate monthly 'Economic Flash Reports' with in-depth analysis of short-term economic indicators.
- Provide end-user training to staff in the unit and the department on data products in production, and present on specialised topics in the data science sphere.
- Conduct methodological research, with an emphasis on data science applications within a central bank environment.
- Contribute to the compilation of analytical and methodological notes.
- Contribute to internal data science documentation and procedures in the department and participate in SARB-wide and external forums.
- Assist with presentations as required, including the management of external forums.
- Perform general administrative and ad hoc tasks required by the unit.
To be considered for this position, candidates must be in possession of:
- an Honours degree in Economics, Finance, Statistics and/or a related field; and
- two to five years' experience in economic analysis, with proven project-based data science experience.
- an affinity for statistics and economic analysis;
- the ability to code in R (experience with the 'tidyverse' and 'Shiny' R packages as well as R Markdown files would be an added advantage);
- being task-oriented, with time management skills to operate in a deadline-driven environment that often requires working under pressure, without compromising on quality;
- the ability to work independently as well as within a team/project environment;
- good report writing skills;
- an affinity for statistics compilation applying computerised systems;

The SARB offers remuneration and benefits commensurate with the level of the position and in line with the market. The level at which the successful applicant will be appointed will depend on his/her competence and experience.

Section 224 of the Constitution of South Africa states the mandate of the SARB as follows:
The primary object of the South African Reserve Bank is to protect the value of the currency in the interest of balanced and sustainable economic growth in the Republic.
The South African Reserve Bank, in support of its primary objective, must perform its functions independently and without fear, favour or prejudice.

The Prudential Authority regulates financial institutions and market infrastructures to promote and enhance their safety and soundness, and support financial stability.
Financial Markets
Open market operations are the main tool we use to implement monetary policy. We manage South Africa's gold and foreign exchange reserves.
Financial Surveillance
The SARB is responsible for regulating cross-border transactions, preventing the abuse of the financial system and supporting the regulation of financial institutions.
Payments and Settlements
The SARB is responsible for ensuring the safety and soundness of the national payment system, which is the backbone of South Africa's modern financial system.
Statistics
The SARB provides important economic and financial statistics that present an overview of the economic situation in South Africa.
Research
Research conducted by the SARB focuses on economics, financial stability, banking and emerging trends in finance. Our research supports policy decision-making.
Banknotes and Coin
The SARB has the sole right to make, issue and destroy banknotes and coin in South Africa.

The key function of the ESD is the compiling of economic statistics and conducting analysis and research, through:
• Providing quality-assured macro-economic statistics and analysis to support decision making.
• Strengthening and optimising the ability to acquire and organise quality data and information.
• Extending the statistical measurement and analysis of the economy aligned with international best practice and users' needs.
• Enhancing methodological research, analysis, and publications.
• Modernising and improving statistical compilation processes and frameworks.
