Daily Maverick is looking for a Graphic Designer to join our Joburg Bureau on a one-year contract. This role requires a highly experienced and technically proficient designer who elevates our editorial aesthetic and makes the Daily Maverick brand instantly recognizable.

This isn't just about sharp design—it's about a deep appreciation for the craft, particularly illustration/composite images, typography, and layout. We need someone who can turn a complex story into a single, arresting image that stops readers, sparks conversation, and maintains a powerful, consistent visual identity.

Minimum Requirements
Who You Are: The Design Purist

You are a designer with a strong classical foundation and a keen eye for editorial quality. 

  • Aesthetic Expert: You possess an obsession with typography, colour, and editorial layout, and know how to break the rules with purpose.
  • Killer Portfolio: You have a portfolio demonstrating a strong range in illustration, composite/header images, and sophisticated editorial layouts.
  • Technical Proficiency: Adobe Creative Suite and Figma are your playground. Proficiency in tools related to illustration/compositing is essential. Motion/animation skills remain a big bonus.
  • Editorial Mindset: You are comfortable working with journalists and understand that design is storytelling, not decoration.
  • Restless & Ahead: You hunt for fresh styles, new tools, and design ideas that keep us ahead of the curve.
